Hi all can anybody give me advice.
I have recently bought a 1998 996 C2 and after research on the known faults the RMS seal kept popping up. after inspecting the car there was no oil visable and the RMS was replaced by porsche sheffield on the 3.9.09 at 55k and i have the original invoice for the work.
That was good enough for me and i bought the car. after inspection today it looks like oil is leaking out the rms area. Do i have a come back to porsche for the fact the rms has lasted only 4 years????

Unless it is actually dripping onto the floor and just looks like oil sweat, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it as it is unusual to find one that isn't weeping oil slightly.

Pretty much everyone I looked at sweats a bit. Unless it pees out then don't worry about it.

I think Porsche only give 2 year warranty on their parts

Took it in to specislist cars at malton. great set of lads there by the way highly recommended. they have confirmed a bad leak from the RMS.
the part number fitted by porsche sheffield starts with 997 which im lead to beleive is an upgrade that shouldnt fail.

I think if it had failed within 2 years you would not have a problem, but 4 years is pushing it a bit on what Porsche will regard as a replaceable item.

Ideally, oil seals should be changed every 8 years, by that point they start going hard, and although yours is only 4 years old, on the one hand it should be ok, but then again, with extended oil change intervals these days, a car which could have seen some over revs logged by the DME (porsche will say the logged ones pushed the seal beyond its design tolerance), there is a good chance the main dealer who fitted it is off the hook.

If you are having the RMS replaced, also have the IMS bearing and seal plate replaced with one of the uprated ones, and if it has an internal seal, remove it, it is a lot cheaper to have this done while the RMS is replaced, rather than at a later date.. and if it fails, it can make a big mess of the engine.
