Hi - can anyone help?

I'm planning a driving holiday to Germany in mid May with my wife and 2003 911 C4S!

I'd like it to involve a trip to Porsche in Stuttgart, the Black Forest, Munich, Bavarian castles, windy roads, autobahns and a several large German beers!

I've been recommended Belgium and Luxembourg as a route into Germany, but beyond then I'm looking for some help. Does anyone have an itinerary or suggested route for a weeks tour?

Germany is quite big. If you're not careful and try to do too much in a week, it may end up as less of a holiday and more of an endurance test.

However, Germany is a wonderful country and I'd suggest a blast down to Stuttgart to the museum and maybe the factory and then an amble back to Adenau or Nurburg to take in the forests and the little race track there. I could think of worse things to do than, say, visit Cochem on the Mosel and then cruise all the way down to Trier and the Porta Nigra (it's Roman).

Autobahns do get busy and there's not necessarily as much unrestricted road as you may think.

As Richard says above, it's a big place and can take some time to get from north to south, traffic jams on the autobahn can be as bad as in the UK.

Another thing to watch for is that they tend to give much less warning of roadworks (bearing in mind the higher speeds) - you can be zooming down a clear stretch and suddenly find a lane closure; in Germany this tends to be done with solid concrete barriers, none of the "soft" plastic cones you get in the UK.

I don't know what car you have but some city centres have environmental zones that you aren't supposed to enter unless your car is displaying a coloured sticker showing how green it is.

One final suggestion, if you're going through Belgium and Luxembourg don't stop (apart from fuel and shopping) as the accommodation & food tends to be more expensive; try and overnight close to the Channel if you have an early or late train/ferry.

Forgot, officially you need a Low Emission Sticker on your windscreen, as above, for major cities. A frinds 3.2 isn't allowed into Stuttgart anymore...

Brugge and Ghent are in Belgium and are both nice to visit for a stopover.

Very true but It doesn't seem to stop classic owners from making their way to the Porsche museum.
I heard that they only seem to patrol for them on the streets- so if parked under the museum you should be fine.

I understand using Belgium if just driving to the destination but would say the run across the Vosges mountains and onto the Black forest makes for a much more interesting and entertaining journey.
The Belgium motorways are some of the worst I've driven on! but if you do go that way, just miss the Brussels ring road at busy times!!

Tipec did a run last year and I'd suggest you look for that thread as the destinations looked excellent.

Agreed, Vosges region is well worth a visitv- been a few times. Riquewihr is a very nice place to visit / stay at. And not a massive schlep from Stuttgart.
