Dont believe the hype from ProTyre...

If you suck all the air out of the tyre, it will come off the bead and be impossible to inflate... The only way to make sure the tyre does not have any impurities in it before it is nitrogen filled is to fill it in a vacuum cabinet, which looks less like a shot blasting cabinet but more like an autoclave and are MASSIVE..

While incapacitated recently, I spent a lot of time on research of different issues which were niggling in the back of my mind, one was the "5th gear test" on Nitrogen filling of tyres, and why the results were really quite unusual.

But the research led me to some discoveries which were quite shocking, in particular, that a tyre filled with dry compressed air a few months ago and has been topped up on a regular basis for natural wastage, would actually have a higher percentage of nitrogen in it, than a tyre filled yesterday by a garage with a nitrogen machine.

So, it needs finishing, but I have written an article on the subject for the website, which explains why the above case happens, and why a nitrogen filled tyre might not be what it is cracked up to be.

I will add some fancy graphics to the article in time, along with editing it with one plus point I can see with nitrogen filling, which is that the natural seepage of oxygen through the fabric of the tyre, which causes only nitrogen and trace gasses to remain, is actually damaging to tyres, which on Porsche cars, which may not be used on a regular basis, might mean that tyres do not need changing after 6 years due to cracking, and you might actually get another couple of years out of them if your tyres are filled with nitrogen and topped up with nitrogen... But that is another avenue of research into how much damage seen as perishing on a tyre is due to oxygen flowing through the rubber, compared to being caused by oxygen being in contact with the entire outside of the tyre.

78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% 2nd hand farts, works well.

I tell you, the wind I've had this week, my tyres would be over-inflated if they had been on the receiving end... too much fruit see. Honestly? That'll be 'normal' air in my tyres. It's been alright for me all these years so I see no need to change.

N is great for race cars, but a bit of overkill on road cars IMHO, mind you I do know of a southern region members wife who got the tyre guys to pump up her new tyres with it

Hi I have Nitrogen in my tyres.... ProTyre in Poole have one of the new Nitrogen fillers that sucks out the old air first then fills 100% with Nitrogen.... At least they dont lose any pressure..... All the best Brett

I run my tyres with a nice 79% Nitrogen cocktail, works for me, and its free

Hi Jon Very interesting... I get my Nitrogen free anyway so no loss to me, because I go through so many tyres because of my Nitrous system... lol All the best Brett

That's interesting Jon, I'd always thought it was a gimmick at a normal tyre shop, I can understand the chemistry and physics behind it but couldn't see it working in the real world. F1 is a different ball game and what is good for the goose is not always good for the gander!!
