Hi all,

I have just b ought a new 981 Boxster S which will be delivered on Friday.

I am being offered a great deal on GAP and Tyre insurance. I've always turned this down, but I've never owned such an expensive car...

Is this package worth having? Any positive or negative views will be most welcomed please.

I've taken gap on my new car not from the OPC but ALA whom offer a competitive product and it will give some value back should the worst happen.

I've had tyre insurance from another marque and they did replace one tyre was a little fight as they couldn't find a puncture even though it went flat bit of chat and they 'found' a hole. This said you are dealing with an insurance company via the dealer whom are making a claim on your behalf effectively.

Not knowing the numbers only you can decide if its value.

For me I like the comfort of gap and using ALA its reasonable, I self insure the tyre risk looking at past tyre spend and cost to replacement but a bit aside each month to cover it.

The above isn't advice just my thoughts!!

As with all "extra" insurance and warranties, it's a lottery if you will ever use it. I think it comes right down to the piece of mind knowing you're covered. If it's a great deal and for a little extra outlay, you might enjoy sleeping easier at night. The chances are, if you have it you won't need it. I think that's a good thing, but it is personal preference. I haven't renewed my warranty on my car, and have been stung for over £1500 worth of repairs since I let it laps. The year I had a warranty I never made one claim.

I took both out this time round...
There are two types of GAP insurance and the amounts paid out reflect in the purchase cost.
Return to Invoice and new car I think they are classed as..

I took tyre and rim insurance out at about £299, I'd not had it before and only ever once caught a rim- although lost a few tyres due to pot holes etc..
I noticed that the rears had very little tyre protection so I took it out.
Following the trip to Monaco and the Eurotunnel I discovered that I can't get on the standard carriage without catching a rim by as I pass the toilet blocks :(
This resulted in two rims getting damaged, pleased to say that the repairs were done to an excellent standard and paid for via the insurance. At £100 per rim I'm almost ahead!!

GAP insurance, pleased to say I've never had to claim on it... although many will point out that for a new car your own insurance will usually cover a full replacement for the first year.
I see it as year 2 and 3 that if the worse happens, then its a winner.

Thanks for advice and opinions Guys.

I was given a hefty discount on the Gap and tyre insurance, so went for it. As already mentioned, if I have it, I won't need it!!

Talking of sods law... My Mother lives down a country lane, which is currently very narrow due to overgrown grassy banks and brambles. This lane is normally very quiet, but, low and behold, when I drove my new 981 round to show her, I encountered a Transit van and two Shoguns coming in the opposite direction, then a further two 4x4's on my return journey!! I'm happy to say I stood my ground and forced them into the brambles, though I thought I was going to lose a door mirror on the speeding Transit :x :x

I've since paid Mother a visit in my little Fiat, and didn't encounter anything in either direction!! Sods law or what!!!

Oh that sounds so familiar, took the Speedster to Club night for the first time in three years. They had spread gravel over one of the roads for a few miles. :(
