Believe it or not there is a British Standard for number plates:

The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics of the number plate. This includes visibility, strength and reflectivity. The British Standard also requires each number plate to be permanently and legibly marked with the following information:
n the British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d);
n the name, trade mark or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier; and
n the name and postcode of the supplying outlet.

I've known a car fail an MOT for a delaminated number plate that was no longer readable. In theory the car should fail the MOT if the plates don't comply. If you use incorrect spacing on your plate to make up a funny word etc then it's an automatic MOT fail and if stopped by the Police they can issue you with a defect notice. Judging by the number of plates I see with incorrect spacing the Police don't seem to do this much - I suppose they don't get make much money from it.

Hi As anyone any advice with regard to number plates showing the Porsche Crest? I believe these are technically show plates and thus illegal? However, if the letter font and size is correct etc would they fail an MOT?

I have no experience in this, so may well be wrong The plates must not have a background pattern, but a Porsche crest should be ok if all other criteria are met https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-pl ... dentifiers

A lot depends on the year, if it is pre-2001 then the rules are a lot more relaxed. These are mine from FancyPlates.com never had any issues either with plod or MOT time. This is mine. The Box has a similar style plate as well. The Text along the bottom says The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club

I never had any issues with the show plates on my 944S, they had a Porsche crest at the side and a logo along the bottom, no BS numbers on them but car was an '88 and MOT never mentioned them either.

Thanks everyone I'm just thinking of the options available because I plan to put a private plate on the Cayman but I would also like the porsche crest on the plate also. Looks like I'll look for someone to make them up. Any recommendations for an online supplier to purchase them from ?? John

John As I said above www.fancyplates.com based out of Ireland so no faffing with V5s & ID etc. Very quick service.
