WA11 KER Pulled from Auction
June 8, 2012
Posted in Number Plates — Written by Dan W

DVLA have been caught with their trousers down as they remove the personalised number plate from the June auction.

The registration had been advertised for weeks before being deemed too offensive for British roads with just over a week until hammer time.

DVLA say they originally included the number plate “in salute of the race walking fraternity” as well as for the popular surname, Walker, but later said:

“This is something we would not tolerate and as such the decision was taken to withdraw it from the sale.”

Offensive plates usually do not get issued, the DVLA are even known to take back inappropriate registrations, so it is wondered why it took them this long to realise their mistake or if public complaints prompted the removal.

“It is a very good number plate for the surname” says Eric Craggs, the Chairman of National Numbers. “We have received a lot of interest from customers and I imagine it could have gone for a lot of money.”

The last Walker number at auction was “W41 KER”. It sold for £16,000 in 2000.

I seem to remember they did the same years ago with STR 1P

I'm sure PEN15 was on Steve Parish's car at one point, and IIRC he sold/swapped it for PAR15H

I drove past GAY 80Y in Edinburgh many years ago and thought it was quite a good reg plate... for the right individual.

HI 5EXY was a frequent number plate around where I live some years ago!

And I went to a gay club in Edinburgh once...first time I've seen a pair of Leather trousers with the bum cut out on a guy with a moustach! Now I'm wondering if that was a joke or serious?

PEN 1S would have been a Bury, Lancs number as well. I remember GEN1E (or was it GEN 11?) up there too :)

This whole thing can be something of a mine-field, particularly if local dialect is taken into consideration. I used to see many cars around with "FUD" in their registration. Where I was brought up, that was a slang term for female genitalia.

One plate I do remember seeing was "K9 CUM" in the Aberdeenshire area. It was on a BMW.
