Perhaps a silly question but I'll ask anyway...

I'm going to Islay for a few days next month and will be taking the c4s over on the ferry.

Should I be concerned about driving on / off the ferry due to the ground clearance?

I've never taken a car on a ferry before but would have guessed it would be ok. However, I have experienced a few scrapes on some ridiculously tall speed bumps so thought I would ask.

Has anyone experienced this and if so what were the results?

Thanks for your time.

Regards
Billy

Answered my own question....

After some more googling I found a thread on the Z4 forum where they took 19 cars to Islay. There is an excellent pic of a car going onto the ferry so all looks good. Some of the back roads look a bit dodgy tho.

Hope this info helps someone else...

Regards
Billy

Never taken the Islay ferry, but took my C4 to Jersey recently

The front splitter (GT3 body kit) scraped on the ramp very loudly - both on and off
but no noticeable damage done

If I didn't have the body kit, I think the clearance would have been ok

Enjoy Islay

Fortunately our front spoiler is rubberised, I have whacked it a few times over the years

I watched a staff car (our CO's Vauxhall Cavalier) going up the ramps on to a military ferry, when we went Harwich-Bremerhaven in '88.

Despite the protests, the CO's driver still took it on, watched very carefully by the loading staff  .
Hmmm, what's all that liquid running down? Oh, I know - PETROL!! D!ckhead split his fuel tank open  .

I've found that going slowly and maybe at a bit of an angle helps... boarding a ferry.

having used ferries on many occasions I have found that a word with the loadmaster prior to boarding if you are concerned about grounding has resulted in the use of a variety of devices to prevent it , so don't be concerned, but speak up, because these devices are not always forthcoming unless asked for!

I found this too, they're happy to help if you ask. :D

Thanks all for the advice.

Girlfriend wanted to take the freelander but have now convinced her that we dont need to :)

Hopefully I'll get some good pics of the car against scenic backgrounds.

Regards
Billy
