My garage is a pretty much standard size - 7'9" x 16'6". It has an up and over door at the front (obviously) and a door at the back that goes into the hallway. There's a bench at the back with a filing cabinet / tumble dryer / beer fridge underneath it. That takes 2'6" off the usable length. If I put the 944 in the front bumper almost touches the door and I have about 12" at the back to get to the beer fridge. The garage isn't wide enough to put a car in and work on (except an old Mini), but I am considering whether it's worth putting a pit into it so that I can get underneath. Has anybody got any experience of this? Type / costs / is it worth it / should I just stick with ramps and axle stands, etc etc. Should be interesting..... Thanks |

A garage pad will only be 6" of concrete at best with soil underneath presumably. |

I have done it before and its a big job, but one which will make big jobs in the future so much easier for you. Most importantly, you can get to spend a weekend playing with a mini digger.. awesome! You can buy a preformed lining, but to be honest, I would have it built out of heavy high newton concrete blocks, tank out the hole first, build a small sump into it (24" x 24"x24") for water to collect, plumb a pipe into it leading to a central heating water pump mounted on the wall somewhere, wired up to a switch, so it it ever floods you will be able to pump it out... I would also buy some "brick lights" from screwfix, and wire them into the pit as well to give you light. Do it all right and you will have a wonderful setup, which will make getting under your car a complete dream. |
