petitions are a waste of time, they are 1 piece of paper, the way to go is individual letters to both your mp and PM, at the bottom you put "i look forward to your reply". the letters dont have to be hand written just signed and addressed. A petition is one piece of paper, you can put one piece in the bin, try putting 50 pieces in the bin after operning envelopes etc. Also the bottom bit means you are expecting a response, it also adds to the mp's costs and time to sign them which pisses them off, so they start to ask questions of those who can solve things.

This really is the political activists tool of choice rather than petitions.

Can you imagine, if thousands and thousands of people wrote to there MPs and all posted the letter on the same day.

yep, the chaos is wonderfull if you are trying to achieve a result. The postal bods get he arse with the recipients as well !

think of it this way, if i sent the membership secretary a petition he can provide one answer to a hundred people, if he gets 100 letters to which he is ecpected to reply, which is going to exercise his mind more?

oh and you always use snail mail, these have to to have a reply sent back, that means more time is eaten into !

even better to send 200 letters 100 of them a cc of the origional to your mp's boss.

You are probably right about it not doing any good, but if everyone thinks that way, nobody will sign it and the government will think it can carry on doing as it likes. We are heading for £1.50 a litre as it is. So it's got to be worth a try and it costs nothing to sign.

i am all for trying to do something mate, I just understand the way to go bout it isnt the petition, imagine 200 thou letters arriving !

I m with Gordon on this one.Just imagine a scene from "Yes Prime Minister" with Paul Eddington and Nigel Hawthorne.PM "Morning Sir Humphrey,whats the public reaction to the latest 20p increase in fuel duty?" SH "Oh nothing to worry about yet Prime Minister,they re only at the petition stage so far." PM "Oh good,do you think we could add another 10p next week then?" SH " I dont see why not Prime Minister,we re an affluent society,we can get a bit more out of them yet before they start really complaining and even then,they have to use their cars to get to work,there could be a few marches on Downing street but they are aware that if they get too rowdy we can arrest them and put them in jail".PM "What ,all of them?" SH "Good Lord no Prime Minister,we only need to arrest a few,then the British public will turn on them and say that the police were quite right to arrest them for behaving like that in public,this is England after all and why couldnt they just sign a petition like the rest of us"PM "lunch Sir Humphrey?" SH "Yes Prime Minister."
