Post subject: | Oil advice and recommendations here |
I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others. So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation: Make Model Year Engine size/type Any mods Type of use (road/track) Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used) What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc? I hope this will help and become a useful thread Regards Guy |

Hi. Mines a Porsche 944 lux,1984,2.5 8v/non turbo,no mods, road use only,no oil temp gauge, just coming up to 155ooo miles.I ve been using Castrol GTX High Mileage oil in the engine as its supposed to be the best for an old motor like mine.It seems to run ok with that.I do about 3000 miles a year and change the oil and filter about twice a year.I know thats probably once too often but once its turned black I reckon its not as good as it was when I put it in.As regards the gearbox I havent done anything with that but was planning to drain it and refill with Swepco which seems to be the popular recommendation. So, is what Im using the best I can get or what? There are all sorts of additives on the shelves in places like Halfords etc. but Ive always believed them to be unnecessary if you use a good oil in the first place and change it often. Is that true? Regards, John. |

First up the GTX is pretty basic stuff and you will pay opver the odds for it, you dont need a special oil for a high mileage engine so I would look at a decent 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changes as you are doing, something like the Fuchs XTR 10w-40. A good 75w-90 for the gearbox and swepco is popular but any decent quality/well branded one will be ideal. Dont bother with any additives, you are correct if you are suing quality oil they are not needed as the oil will have everything you need to keep it tip top. Cheers Guy. |

Hi , am using x-cess 8100 5-40 in my '96 993 , only for road use , doing max 3000 per year , am I still using the best option for this engine , and given the low milage and duty , do you think I need to change the luricant every year or maybe just the filters ? Cheers Steve |

Steve, Its a fine oil and Porsche approved, very good value so I would stick with it. Oil should be changed annually regardless, its not the oils its self but more the additives in it that needs changing. Cheers Guy. |

Hi! My 924 is standard and used as a daily driver. Has 148k on the clock. Runs 4-5 when cold/ at speed and idles at 2-3 when warmed. Only recently bought it so don't know what oil's in it at the moment and want to change it soon as it only covered about 1000 miles a year before I got it and I'm not sure when it was last changed. Also, was told these engines tend to burn a little because they only have 3 rings. Is this right? Not that it's an oil burner. I've done 1500miles since early Nov and had to put in 2 litres..Thanks for your help. Gary |

Hi, A good 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular change will be fine, not know what is in there its hard to tell if it will effect consumption. Have a look at the Fuchs XTR 10w-40 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-990-fuchs-t ... e-oil.aspx Cheers Guy |
