As some of you will be aware, VOSA are in the process of revising the MOT test. Many changes will come into effect from January 2012. Many of these are as a result of more Euro-nonsense being imposed on our once independant nation.
There has been a lot of alarmist misinformation bandied around the Web regarding how this will effect modified vehicles, however, there are some changes which may catch Jeepers with modified vehicles out that are worth being aware of.
Below is a link to the proposed revised edition of the tester's manual, which lists test methods and the only legitimate reasons a tester can fail your vehicle. This is still subject to further revision. Changes from the current publication are indicated by a bold vertical line alongside the offending paragraph.
Changes of note include;
Electrical system. Wiring and battery mounting will be checked for condition and security. Tow bar electrical socket will be checked for condition and security and 13 pin tow sockets will be electrically tested for correct operation.
Vehicles with HID headlamps should have self levelling and headlamp washer systems, and these must be operational. The wording on this is a bit vague, I have asked for clarification as we have been told that this is the case, but the manual uses terms such as "may be fitted" and "if fitted" which ain't no help when arguing the toss with some 'erbet who's just had his Saxo failed.
Emissions. If a vehicle was fitted with a catalytic converter as standard, it must be present. Diesels registered after 1st July 2008 now have to pass with half the emissions of previously registered vehicles.
ESP. If a vehicle is fitted with an electronic stability control system the warning lamp must not show a fault.
Electronic power steering. The warning lamp must not indicate a fault.
Airbag/SRS systems. Airbags must be present and undamaged. Warning light must not indicate a fault.
The main beam tell-tale light is now a testable item.
Rubber boots on ball joints can now fail if excessively deteriorated.
It should also be noted that testers are entitled to fail "inappropriate" modifications to steering, suspension and braking system components.
There are many other detail changes, some to improve on the previous manual, some additional items.
