BBC TV and Sky Sports have been awarded the live rights to Formula One between 2012 and 2018.

The move will bring increased choice, innovation and breadth of coverage to UK and Irish motor racing fans.

"We will give Formula One the full Sky Sports treatment with a commitment to each race never seen before on UK television."
Barney Francis, Sky Sports
Quotes of the week
The two leading UK sports broadcasters will offer fans unparalleled live High Definition coverage of every race of the season.

The broadcasting partnership will include:

All races, qualifying and practice sessions live on Sky Sports across TV, Online and Mobile and Tablet devices

Half the races and qualifying sessions remain live on BBC TV, Online and Mobile including key races such as the British Grand Prix, Monaco Grand Prix and the final race of the season.

The audiences brought by Sky and BBC will ensure Formula 1 reaches the widest possible audience.

BBC Radio Five and Sports Extra will continue to cover every race live.

Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports, said: "This is fantastic news for F1 fans and Sky Sports will be the only place to follow every race live and in HD.

"We will give F1 the full Sky Sports treatment with a commitment to each race never seen before on UK television. As well as unrivalled build up to each race on Sky Sports News, we will broadcast in-depth live coverage of every session.

"Sky customers with Sky Sports will also be able to enjoy F1 across multiple platforms and devices, including Sky Go."

Formula One will join the line-up of live sport on Sky Sports, which marked its 20th birthday in April. Subscribers can enjoy Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League football, England Test matches, three of golf's four Majors including the Masters from Augusta, international, European and domestic rugby union, Super League rugby and a host of other sports events.

Extensive BBC highlights on TV, Online and Mobile, of all races and qualifying sessions that BBC is not covering live

Build- up coverage of each Grand Prix on BBC News, Sky Sports News and Sky News

Extensive multi-platform coverage including red button, bbc.co.uk/sport and skysports.com

Another sport gone to the greedy empire.

Suppose Sky will pay the money direct to Bernie Ecclestone who will distribute a little to his friends in the teams. Supporters are of no interest to governing bodies of any sport these days. Formula One viewing figures will drop off but income from TV will increase.

Shame as the recent BBC coverage has been the best for many years. :(

I agree Richard,

Looks like another sport gone.

Great, what about the good ones like the Canadian GP?

What? How does this change from today’s setup, if you have Sky then you can watch it on the BBC, soon if you don’t pay Sky then you can’t watch it?

No its not, it should be on free-to-view, are Sky putting it on a free channel, I don’t think so!

Outlook, I will spend more time with my family on a Sunday afternoon (if I am not cleaning the Porsche)

I've just posted this elsewhere :- A few weeks ago it was the Tour de France or F1, TdF straight away, especially as I'd been watching it for 3 weeks. This will be the death knell for F1 especially given the current hatred for Mr Murdoch. It will also be interesting seeing what the F1 advertisers feel about the fewer viewers.

Now calm down everyone 8) ,it wont be the end of F1 for a start and if you sit down and think it through it will give more in depth coverage than the BBC would ever do for those who want to pay for it (or go to the pub!) :D and the highlights will still be on the Beeb for long time fans like myself who just want to see the racing and dont want to hear all the teen/fashion news associated with todays "Personalities" or "celebrities". .I do believe the BBC have done a good job with the recent coverage but credit where its due no-one has done more to popularise F1 than Bernie. He really does deliver,OK he makes himself a massive fortune along the way but good luck to the guy(not that he needs that). You see I remember when there was no coverage on TV  .I also remember what a dump Silverstone was from a fans point of view until Bernie cracked his whip and got it sorted  .So dont worry about it ,the exciting bits will be on the highlights and the boring bits on Sky.You pays your money and........... :)

OK then, every third race, you get to choose the pub. Everyone is happy, except Rory who's driving.

Love the way the BBC are hailing this as a 'great thing for the F1 Fan', what sort of idiots make these sorts of press releases??, ah yeah... the sort that go to news international London parties......(or used too) ITV ruined the F1 tv coverage, I can see Sky TV doing the same thing.... you watch the later part of the season will no doubt become a pay per view event I guarantee it.......the 'mugs will be forced to shell out for a Sky sports supscription, and still pay a further £19.99 to watch 'EXCITING HIGH DEF F1' exclusivly.... yada yada yada..

Makes me sick....... :x :x :x
