AT review;

friend does major mileage (~300 miles a day) and is happy with his mondeo, which is the same engine and platform, but i'd want something a bit more luxurious.

Honda CRV 2.2 Diesel turbo..... the wife has had hers for a couple of years from new - fast economical and I'm 6'2" - would not have been my choice to start with - but after driving it for several thousand miles I think it was a good decision. My daily drive is a 735il BMW plus the 928 S4.... so that's praise coming from me!!

Golf diesel, tons of room and you can fit a full set of wheels in the back.

Skoda Octavia vRS TDI or Elegance/Laurin & Klement if you fancy a bit more luxury.
Cheaper and probably better spec than a Golf diesel with the same running gear. Plus you get a massive boot!

I'm 5'10" and probably weigh more than you, so I would look at the seats too if your going to spend hours a day in the car. The Jag is a good shout, I had the Mondeo and as with all Ford's, gave me back ache. My dad had the Honda CRV and it was good, but after 70k miles in two years was a bit rattly. I've never tested the Skoda, but I've heard good things about the car and it's fuel consumption. I think the last golf I drove was a mk2 and had Recaro's in it. My Pug 407 seat was a disaster after commuting from Scotland to Hull every week for a year. My current Insignia seat is very good after nearly a year and 20k, and the car is going great.

Umm Jag X-type isn't very much Mondeo, in fact only around 20%. It is also based on old mondeo floor pan pressing so is quite a bit smaller. There have been some teething probs on the injection system of both the 2 & 2.2 systems & it isn't the same as the Mondeo, some of these issues can be expensive.
I've had 3-4 on loan & they drive pretty well. Check the clutch is OK as like most deseasals it has a DMF & a clutch is major work & can need the flywheel replaced which will be big money. Tyre life on the front isn't fantastic either. I don't like the ride of the Sports but that is a personal thing, the SE & Sovereigns ride much nicer.

CRV is one of the best 4X4's out there. Despite it's size is can manage around 45 to the gallon. But I wouldn't call it fast. Feels pretty gutless after my '44. But I would go for it all the same if your doing lots of miles. It's the best of the fleet bar the super cars! Not sure you will get one for 10K though. Jags are cheaper.

320D BMW. Bulletproof engine, good MPG and reasonable running costs.

Ah-ha you have hit a nerve.

I have a brand new one sitting at work! Have driven it for 2months 6k miles and have handed it back saying I will never drive it again!!
The most uncomfortable car I have ever had, with the cheapest nastiest seats going. Can barely walk with leg pain after an hour or so in it. Handed it back 5 days ago and my legs still not recovered.

Looks like I will be taking a hit and coming out the car scheme.

You are kidding! Blown turbos, self destruct inlet manifolds etc. etc.

Your not kidding. Guy at work went for a Fiat Braavo 150hp turbo. He had 3 months off with back pain from the crappy seats. He can't drive it at all now. Switched to the CRV. Very sedate but comfortable. :) Have to say the Fiat felt like 90hp to me. The 944 left if for dead though it shouldn't have.....

Honda Accord 2.2Cdti - I had one for a year or so, not exciting but massively reliable, quick (ish) comfortable and cheap to run.
