London street rakes in £1 million in traffic fines A road in Lambeth, South London, less than half a mile long, made £914,040 in fines from drivers in 2010 - the most in the city. Two bus lane cameras and traffic wardens generated 16,800 fines on Clapham Park Road, which were worth as much as £2,500 per day. The shocking figures came from a Freedom of Information request by London's Evening Standard newspaper. The investigation also revealed the top 20 earning roads for London councils. Speaking to the Evening Standard, a spokesman for Lambeth said: "This is an extremely busy area used by thousands of vehicles a day and a minority of motorists add to congestion by driving in the bus lane." The funds generated by tickets on Clapham Park Road were around a third more than London's next highest earning road - Green Lanes in Haringey, which made £606,903 in 2010. That was followed closely by The Broadway/Herbert Rd in Ealing, which racked up £534,041. The London borough that made the most money from drivers last year was Kensington and Chelsea, which amassed a huge £36 million. 20 most profitable roads for London councils named: Clapham Park Road (Lambeth) - £914,040 Green Lanes (Haringey) - £606,903 The Broadway/Herbert Rd (Ealing) - £534,041 Kentish Town Road (Camden) - £395,491 Mare Street (Hackney) - £356,012 Chiswick High Road (Hounslow) - £351,416 Elephant Road (Southwark) - £327,472 Lea Bridge Road (Waltham Forest) - £250,270 King's Road (Kensington and Chelsea) - £203,123 Penge High Street (Bromley) - £194,005 Baker Street (Westminster) - £189,515 Uxbridge High Street (Hillingdon) - £172,075 London Road (Croydon) - £171,295 Hackney Road (Tower Hamlets) - £145,612 Macfarlane Road (Hammersmith & Fulham) - £135,319 Garratt Lane (Wandsworth) - £118,436 Wellington Street (Greenwich) - £75,726 Yew Grove (Barnet) - £47,910 Market Place Car Park (Havering) - £34,185 Grove Road (Sutton) - £22,686 no comment |

Probably going to get a roasting here, but I do agree with fines for illegal parking. It causes congestion and slows traffic flows, so it does cause problems. Also, it must be very frustrating for bus drivers when their lanes are blocked either through people parking or illegally driving in them. I remember the times when we didn't have such things as bus lanes, but those days are long gone and I'm afraid that we will just have to live with them. If the councils didn't collect these fines, they will still have to find the money from somewhere (extra tax/rates etc). I'm now going to hide behind the nearest hedge!!! |

But why o why do they let that many cars into an area that cannot sustain them moving? The Kingston Bridge in Glasgow is the most used bridge in Europe, and now an extension to the M74 is being made to allow the cars going south to not have to travel over the bridge. This will allow cars only travelling east to have to go over the bridge. Paris used to have the same problem as London, now don't see all the cars parked on the streets any more. They built massive underground car parks. Is there a plan to help the situation, or just keep fining the stupid ones? |

The law-abiding motorist has nothing to worry about. My speeding fines in the past 10 years? Nil My parking fines in the past 10 years? Nil My spot fines in the past 10 years? Nil Nope, I'm not perfect, but I try to stick to marked speed limits, I don't park on yellow lines and my car is maintained. Obviously other people may have different forces acting upon them which means they speed, park illegally and don't/can't maintain their cars. Oh dear. |

I got my vehicle towed after staying on a yellow line for 10 mins as when I arrived at night all the residents parking spaces were gone. The B%$&ds did tow the person without a ticket though who parked in my F&%£ing residents parking bay! I threatened to take them to court over damage to my tyres though and got pretty much the fine paid back. Complaining works wonders! Especially when you pull the 'my expert opinion as a qualified mechanical engineer' thing. Haha |

Parking fines maybe but Bus lane fines in London are a definite scam, weird start & stop points, varying times from borough to borough & even within boroughs. It is a massive scam & people outside the Greater London area just don't comprehend how complex. |
