Been a thread running on PH about some cheap tools available at Aldi. Just been to Gillingham Aldi & spent 150 quid

I've just bought these:-

Spot blaster kit with 2kg grit 9.99
3/8 reversible air drill 9.99
Air shear 12.99
Air filter regulator lubricator 11.99
15M wall mounted air hose 39.99
Motorcycle helmet 39.99

The helmet is for the odd track day as a passenger as I hate wearing sweaty helmets.
The air tools all look very similar to screwfix/machine mart etc. & have a 3 year warranty. Didn't buy the air wrench or compressor cos I already have them but a 2.5HP 25L compressor for around 80 quid appeared to be a bargain.
The rest of the stuff for the 150 odd quid was a peace offering for the missus, smoked salmon, cakes etc.

Took a leaf our of your book Jim. Popped along to motorcycle dealers today - first one just wanted to hear his till ringing, and didn't have what I wanted. Second one - bought an end-of-line full face helmet, kite-marked for racing, and a snip with £40 off at only £50. As with you, just for the odd track day, and I think i might take my roof off now for the RWYB event at Santa Pod (helmets mandatory in open top cars). Can't wait :D

I've just noted the commentds re the m/cycle helmets whats the score with this :bounce:
I thought for track days you needed these helmets with flame proof lining and the appropriate certification on now so am confused as to how the m/cycle helmets are allowed. Surely they dont have the flame proof lining for 50 quid ?
I would have liked one but seeming as I havnt been on one track day yet 200 plus for a helmet seemed a bit steep ?

I asked in the bike shop, and as soon as I mentioned track days, was told that it needed to meet the specification laid down by the Auto Cycle Union (the governing body for motorcycle sport in Great Britain), and have the gold sticker on saying "ACU approved". Road-going helmets do not meet the specification.
There are two standards, the old one has only one red band around the label, the new has two narrow red bands - mine is the new one.
I got the feeling they wouldn't sell me one morally unless it had been approved, even though in one shop they gave me the impression that the stickers could be bought off the internet.

Personally, I'd guess if it were safe for motorcylce racing, then it should be OK for cars. Does anyone know any different?

I suppose my advice would be - buy from a reputable source.

On some track days (and in any case, those that are "untimed"), there may be no requirement to wear a helmet (timed events indicate speed, and it would therefore be mandatory to wear a helmet in most cases). Sean and I are going to the Santa Pod "Run What Ya Brung", where although timed, there is no requirement for helmets in solid roofed cars. I am hoping to take the hard top off my Boxster for the event, so will require a helmet to be allowed to run.
