I had a good look at an R8 in red the other day, parked up just by my studio. Really looked nice—I’d only seen black ones until then. In red it looked like a totally different car (the black carbon fibre panels disappear into the car when it’s painted black, y’see). Had a touch of the Ferrari about it from behind, then when you walk around to check out the front it looks like a normal Audi. Very odd!

I really, really like the R8, but have a feeling it won’t stand the test of time anywhere near as well as a Porsche does. The design is very ‘now’, whereas we all know that Porsche don’t really ‘do’ fashion or trends.

but the c2 wouldn't get the power down, probable wheelspin, whereas the c4 would just grip and go, the drag of the 4wd would only take effect as it speeds up, or am i even more confused than you ?

No, the C2 is rear wheel drive with a bloody great engine hanging outta the back and with all the power going to the rear wheels and the back end digging in would pull off the line quicker. The C4 would be trying to put the same amount of power to four wheels, but the front end would be lifting and there would be less power to the rear wheels. So it would not get the power to the floor as quick and it would accelerate slower.

Do you ever get the feeling that you wish you hadn't started a conversation?
yeah, but i still say it would wheelspin

Right, so all the top fuel drag racers should equip their dragsters with 4.W.D., eh?

They would if the big tyres at the front didn't present aerodynamic problems later in the run, 4wd if used to its optimum potential should always be quicker off of the line than 2wd if.............. you have the power to maximise the extra traction available

Don't you start. Check out the drag race that Clarkson did with the Audi and 997 C2 that started this conversation. The rear wheel drive Porsche got off the line faster!

I know, has anyone got a 997 Carrera 2 and a 997 Carrera 4. Let's take them to a "run what ya brug" at Warwickshire County Raceway's drag strip and see who wins?

I'm sure you're all trying to wind me up.

Wind you up sir? Don't know what you are on about     , no read what I wrote, in the C2-R8 or even C2-C4 battle the 4 can put twice the horsepower to the road surface at the instant of take off, thats why 4wd rule on less than perfect clean dry tarmac. Try them on a wet surface where they are fighting for grip and see which one wins, the 4's haven't got twice the C2's horsepower but if they did have it would be the same as a wet race where once the rwd reaches the wheelspin point it can go no faster no matter how much more power the car has got. where you can double the amount of horsepower a 4wd can deploy. The other thing is weight, the lighter car should always start quicker thats why bikes with 1wd and just 100hp can do under 4 secs 0-60.
Anyway back on topic, Mr Bird ought to choose his words more carefully for I must admit as soon as I read the original thread and got to the word "client" in a car, my filthy mind went straight in the same direction as Gordon and thought of payment in kind

A chap up the top of my road had one of these Audis and I was well jealous....until I saw the bailiffs towing it away the other day. (Along with his collection of Merc's.)
