I think I heard it failing when he left the Novello the other night :D

Seriously though, hard luck Sean shame you'll have to be without it for a while.

Thats sad. Whats the world coming to. VW/Audi got greedy? Making things too cheap & light. Give me a 10+ year old BMW/Porsche/Merc. They just keep going. The mad thing is that with modern tecnology they know how to do it right. But all they want is the money. But whos going to buy these cars before long. Might as well get an Alfa! I have a friend with a VW lupo thats just topped 250000 miles on it's original engine. They don't make em like that anymore.....

I was meaning the engine. Learned to drive in a mark 1. Only extra was a rear wiper (Not even a radio.) It was the top model! Not much sound proofing either. It was new in 1978. Very much better than anything else back then. Quick enough to embarrass a Stag up to 60.

9.3 seconds 0-60 so your Aunt has a quick mobility scooter. Faster than a Capri 3l & the same as the Merc SL280 which is its real competitor.

The technical big wig looked at the stripped engine components and decided that it needs:-

New valves, new tensioner, new head gasket and other bits and pieces. The bad news is they don't have the parts on the shelf here or in Germany.

They have already had the car for over 2 weeks and it is going to another 5-10 days to get the bits then they need fitting.

I nearly forgot the best bit, which is they can't tell me whether this will solve the problem.

What I don't get is the issue was an engine that didn't tick over properly after a warning light came on. There wasn't any noticable loss in power or performance and it was like this with VW knowing about it for 3 weeks.

The gaskets would be default having taken it to bits. Tensioner & presumably timing chain would be pre-requisites for this, but valves, has the timing slipped & bent some valves I wonder? Surprised at this mileage that they have torn it down & are rebuilding it, I'd have thought they would have just dropped another lump in.

I agree with Jim, sounds crazy.

Must be a lack of available lumps I reckon.

perhaps there is a problem with these engines and vw have just run out of stock, a lot of car companies have stopped production due to the credit crunch, maybe vw is one of them

I owned a new Audi 2.6 coupe about ten years ago. After a years ownership and countless faults, Audi offered an exchange car. My neighbours thought I was an Audi salesman because I never seemed to have the same car!
We agreed the value of the mileage that had been completed and Audi swapped the car.
The cheque for the agreed mileage value was never cashed though.

Sounds like a similar experience.
