I was shocked to hear of this dreadful accident to Paul & Judy.
Mary & I sat opposite them at the SYNN Christmas dinner. We were a little isolated at the far end of the table, but we chatted away all evening, talking about cars and all matter of other things, having a few good laughs along the way. Ironically, I recall Paul talking about how concerned he was for car safety and speed, and we discussed tyre brands that would best suit my car, a 944T Cab. I had a new set of Toyo's fitted last month. I recommended to him my local Body Shop (who resprayed both EWOK and my 944T to an unbelievably high standard). Paul duly went along to have his bonnet resprayed where a metal bolt had hit the car. When he went back to collect, he found the lads had not only carried out a superb job to the bonnet, but had continued to respray the wings and the front valance, as they felt the car warranted going "the extra mile". The price had not changed - and Paul was a happy man!
Paul had taken early retirement due to carpel tunnel syndrome, but was looking forward immensly to years of driving his much loved S2 Cab, and being new RO for SYNN. He was a popular, generous, and very likeable guy.
I live a couple of miles from where the accident took place. I am in France at the moment, recovering myself from a small injury in hospital, but earlier this evening, my wife drove to the site of the crash. The front garden wall missing, there was a damaged BMW in the front garden, there was smoke blackening and flowers outside.
No one yet knows what happened, but the stretch of road concerned is where a fast, short stretch of dual carriageway (70 mph I believe) suddenly merges into a 50 mph zone single carriageway. Cars crest a railway bridge - often overtaking much slower vehicles, and only then are able to see that the dualled section turns into a single carriageway within only a few hundred metres. I have frequently seen cars taking urgent braking action (myself included) to adjust speed down rapidly after clearing the bridge. As it is, cars accelerate towards the bridge, often at high speed, and are completely unaware of the changed road condition ahead. There is also a road junction from Caythorpe village exactly where the dualled section turns into the single carriageway section.
For Paul & Judy's memory, I sincerely hope that action will be taken on this road to prevent any future tragic accidents. R.I.P.
