Ok just having a quick panic, it appears the new MOT test will check the ECU for "illegal" aftermarket chips

I'm not sure exactly what makes a chip Illegal.......I'm guessing that they will check insurance policy's to see if it has been declared

anyone shed any more light on what can and can not be done

I'm hoping that older cars will not be subject to the new test, same as my 944 has passed the mot without a cat and vintage cars dont need seat belts.
fingers crossed.

seems crazy to me, do not see how they are going to check it...are they going to have a data base of every map from every manufacturer :?

if my ECU blows up do I have to spend £1000's on an OEM unit or can I buy an aftermarket engine management system .....will this now be illegal

Lets hope the EURO cashes and the EU disolves

Maybe we could be looking at the MOT costing us around the £300 mark to extract and verify the ECU :?

No worries with the 944. They won't even find it & if they did it's crimped together & you only need say "I hope your going to pay for that if you goose it." They will leave it alone. Mine was original chip flashed anyway. How they would know.......

Hi Kongsodoken
I reviewed the new MOT a while back and don't remember any mention of "checking the ECU".
Here is a link to the proposed new MOT Inspection Manual, if you wish to review it.

I hope your right :?

It seems that the ECU may be coming in later, see the VOSA response at the top of page 9 bellow

it appears we will be safe....its to do with the plug and play cars....code comes up with something or other...the bit i dont get,if it passes on the emission and your insurance is notified, whats the problem,i had a2.8 fiat ducato motorhome,ok to drive, nothing to write home about ....chipped it..what a difference!more power but better fuel economy too!
