Honda Accord 2.2Cdti - I had one for a year or so, not exciting but massively reliable, quick (ish) comfortable and cheap to run.

Ditto. I had one as a hire car whilst waiting for the R to be delivered.

Tried the CRV utter shite IMHO, I would rather walk.

XJ12 would need to tow a petrol tanker behind it.

Why? is it still running?

CRV (recent) is only about 500000% better than any freelander that I have experience of, the diesel is a pile of poo(Transit) fine for a van, the petrols spend all of their time in the repair shop. The car is not anywhere in the same class, other than arguably, looks

we have run if for 4 years now and its never had any problems, except when a Corsa decided not to stop at a crossroads, corsa wing, door rear 1/4 front suspension trashed, Freelander front number plate and bumper split.

Its a Turbo Diesel auto and takes all the abuse that we give it

How about Mazda 6. Had a couple of Mazdas with no major problems.
Good reliability and no great expense
