I know its a purely personal thing but I'm interested to know has anyone else had a similar dilemma/thought process. I really like the idea of a 968 thats not in question. However it would have to be the sport if I did get one and a decent one can definately be had for 8,000.

This car would drive to shows maybe twice a month then sit in the garage 'most' of the winter. Nothing wrong with that get it out polish it admire it run to Tesco and back to keep it supple etc :)

I also like the idea of a 944 'S' or an 'S2' but know I definately dont want another 944 turbo , and a good 's's or 'S2' can definately be picked up for 2,500 to 3,500 pounds.

Do you ever think with these cars certainly not being ' an investment' why stick loads of my money in to the dearest one I can afford , why not just buy a 'lesser' classic in good nick and stash a few thou away for a rainy day instead.

Regards

Mas

Loads of boxsters for that money but I would go 968 or 928.

Unless you can afford a 917 few cars are an investment.

It's not about the dearest one you can afford, I am sure Ben will testify that isn't a strategy.

It's about buying a car that is in the best condition for your budget. A book full of oil changes is not a test of condition. There is no such thing as a cheap car, unles you are good with a spanner these cars cost a bit to fix.

You will only lose money on a 944/968/928, unless it's mint and you sell it in 20 years time. The rare models from this stable will continue to appreciate but you will need to up your budget considerably to buy one. Then you'll be scared to take it out :)

Find a car you like buy it and enjoy it, it's a hobby they are supposed to cost money. :D

ER did I write that badly  I think O just said I DONT buy as an investment

I was merely asking if anyone other than me has ever wondered how much is worth spending on what is after all not for most of us something we use day in day out. Has anyone other than me ever enjoyed buying a great car and not necessarily the
'flashest one' , Its as you rightly say for the pleasure. I can buy a 996 a 987 boxster a 968 but it doesnt mean I dont still fancy a Ventiller , it certainly is not about money for me or I wouldnt keep buying the bloomin things lol

Poured way to much money and time into mine Mas (Don't let Mrs Parry know  ) and it certainly does not look concourse but every time I go out I smile from ear to ear (even with the black smoke pouring out the back  ). I suppose have a go in the cars on your list and get the one that's not going to bankrupt you and give's the best satisfaction when you take it out. For me it's a the push in the seat from a hoofing great turbo, others it's the handling, others it's the satisfaction of getting a car to the best they can make it.

My car was the opposite to Bens. Body was as clean as a whistle. Still is underneath. But the mechanics were shot. Despite a massive history file from a well known & respected indi' It had been worked on by monkeys. I could have bought a Boxster. But they don't light my fire. Mine may only be the 2.5 8v. But it goes. Quick enough to worry a Chrysler crossfire. I don't care what it's worth. Just so long as I can find the money to keep improving it. Thats the rub. If I had a Boxster I would leave it alone. But theres so much you can do to the 944. Right now I'm trying to decide whether to go for throttle bodies, or a Bogg Brothers special inlet manifold. I think that Wayne (Chip Wizards.) will advise a week on Monday. It's not concourse & never will be. The drivers seats stitched & the clock doesn't work.Thats not my thing. But like Sean says it's good fun. :bounce: Problem isn't the car. It's me. Give me a shed I don't care. Wouldn't spend a penny on one that I didn't have to. So the wife keeps waving bank statements at me........ :( Would it be cheaper to buy a crossfire? Yes. But they don't do corners. Or have back seats. :blackeye:

I think that any normal person will at some time see more than just the car. I like my 944, but sometimes wish I had kept the white 924?? I don't know why?? If you see a car you like, it will just click into place. It happened a long time ago with my Manta GTE. I ate beans on toast for months just to run it and my wife told me not to do it in the first place, but I wanted it and loved every minute of it. As a second car, you can afford to look around and shop, I don't think price comes into a toy. If you can afford it, you'll buy it. Everyone has there own taste and it would be boring if you could only buy one type of car.

People buy cars like these for different reasons. Personally, I like the 'feel' of owning a nice version and having it parked in the garage. If I can drive it around occasionally that's a bonus. I get pleasure from just looking at it as well, knowing it's mine. For me, the hobby is just having the car.

I tried a 928 and much as I loved the sound of that gorgeous v8 engine it certainly didn't handle as well as any of my 944's it wasn't too comfortable either come to that and whilst I loved the look of the back-end, the rest of the car (79) wasn't anywhere near as good looking as a 944 .
I found myself dreading long journeys and the huge petrol costs certainly took the edge of of any pleasure in owning the car.

I have had 3x 944 now, 1x Lux and 2x S2's and I keep coming back to them because of the supercar' feel to them and the huge spacious cabin. I really feel the car is 'special' when i drive it and I love every angle and everything about the car. Its a little bit of Grand Tourer luxury from a bygone era .

For a few moments every day the car takes me out of my ordinary humdrum life

For me it is all about pleasure. If I could have any car I would still have a 944 in my stable because it gives me such tremendous driving pleasure .

Its simply not about the money is it

Now thats the sort of discussion I was talking about  , for a minute I had started to wonder if provoking a good old fashioned chat was old hat.

Enjoy

Exactly!I feel the same way about my 944,but sometimes things go wrong and being old cars they do cost us some money to the extent that before you know it your heart can rule your head and youve spent more than the cars worth!Ive got that far with mine now but I dont care.I may as well keep it as someone else would get the benefit of my financial input if I sold it and I would probably have to go through it all again anyway! :) Every time I go out in it that silly smile appears and I justify the bills because you cant really put a price on fun can you?

Well put that man. (where's the thumbs up smiley gone?)

I justify the expense because I don't drink, smoke, have Sky TV or have to have the latest techno gadget. My only vice is 2 sugars in me tea and my 944 :bounce:

Oh too true. Think I've got to 4X the value. Wifey keeps threating to add up all the receipts. If she ever does I'm dead........ Driving pleasure doesn't come into it with the accountant. Only the cost. But a new Golf even a 1.4 is 20K so is it really so ruinous???
