It depends on the police authority mate.
I believe most English counties now offer "education" - however, those Antipodean authorities amongst us, well they believe in punishment, not education.
You're lucky you didn't go down for three years..............

if we had been closer to civilisation, then I would have been arrested and the car impounded :(

I got pulled over for speeding about ten years ago. As was usual at the time the Porsche was at home on the drive and I was in the wife's Mazda 323 (the previous time I was in her Mondeo, the next time in her Z3 - but never in the Porsches). Here's the story...

I had been into Manchester to pick Stef up from a corporate do. She had had a little too much to drink and was asleep. I came off the M56 at J7, and as I came onto the A556 I noticed the Police Volvo parked in the layby. Unfortunately I soon forgot about it. I shot along the A556, and as I was going round the roundabout at M6 J19 I noticed the Volvo behind me. As I turned right to go to our village I thought to myself "He's going to pull me" - I was right. The blueys came on and I pulled over. I jumped out of the car and ran back to the driver -

"What's the matter? Hurry up I'm in a rush"
"Please get in the car Sir", I got in the back - they never let you sit in the front do they.. "What's the speed limit on the A556?"
"60 miles per hour", it was then, it's 50 now with speed cameras.
"Why were you doing 70 mph?"
"I'm in a rush to get home, I've left my two children in bed, you can follow me home and check if you want. My dilemma is do I trust taxi driver rapists (there'd been a few at the time) to bring her all the way home from Manchester, or do I leave the kids and go and get her? Please hurry up with this"
"Is this your car?" he asked whilst writing down the number.
"No, it's my partners company car", we weren't married then.

Then they gave me a quick lecture, told me I'd be hearing and let me go - I never ever heard anything. It's a good job they didn't catch me on the motorway, it was a world record there and back - or would have been if they hadn't stopped me.
