We hired James to do some work for us a few years back. Spent a day and evening with him, he's a decent enough bloke stands his round and not bad if you need a babe magnet on a night out.

He is so busy he has a bloke for everything, no issue with that he can afford it. But it does mean he has to trust the advice he is given and his mechanic and engine builder let him down.

Cost isn't an issue he'll make that back if he completes the race next year, plus he'll pocket a few more quid from the production company and the inevitable DVD.

 Really ? I missed that, thought it just had to pre '57 cars, the last year it was run as a true race...? Sounds like some interweb surfing is required for me....
 guess that explains why he didn't take the bubble car, but not why I saw one on the docu, who would enter one of those when it was a race ? Pure mad mental'ness.

Nice guy that James Martin, all is forgiven [/quote]
Found it here:-

http://www.1000miglia.eu/inglese/home.html

List is here

Cars permitted to take part in the event will be vehicles that havecompeted in, or completed registration for, at least one of the original Mille Miglia races (1927-1957), as well as other exemplars of the same make and model.

The preliminary list provided is limited to acknowledged car manufacturers. The list will be updated from time to time on the official website http://www.1000miglia.eu The model names, references and displacements are based on published catalogues.

For models whose category was changed before their production was terminated - though not due to substantial modifications, but because of changing regulations governing motor sport at the time - the category which they currently belong to has been used to assign the coefficient.

For cars in categories VU, T and GT, no mechanical or bodywork changes will be permitted if documentation is not made available to prove that these changes were made at the time of the entry or participation of the specific car and chassis number in the original Mille Miglia.

The list does not include most of those Italian and French one-off “specials” which competed in the Mille Miglia at the time. Any listing of these would be imprecise as to the cars’ specifications and characteristics and would therefore be incomplete and arbitrary. Applicants submitting these cars for acceptance must provide complete documentation, proving the participation of the car or its entry in one of the 24 original Mille Miglia races.

Similar documentation must be provided by applicants for all other models not included in the list.

A long list of eligible cars is listed under 2009 Acceptance.

Thanks Jim,
The programme did not make that clear and therefore perhaps showed him in a less favourable light :)

Finally got around to watching this last night. It certainly was carefully edited to not show the guy in a very positive light. Even the voiceover had a few snotty digs at him, but I reckon all’s fair in self-publicity and media.

Still, good telly.

Going by those rules, he could have entered his Gullwing as an “exemplar of the same make and model” as an original competitor. I reckon he just wanted to buy an open-topped racer because he felt it was more in the spirit of the thing, then sell it on for a potential profit.
