Post subject:  Project 944 Turbo - where to begin?

The time has come to admit that I cant justify keeping two cars, so with regret I'm thinking of selling my 1990 turbo.

The thing is, the car is more of a rolling restoration. Mechanically great, cosmetically shabby, and cat c years ago which will no doubt put people off. Its been in daily use though and is incredibly reliable. It has had loads and loads of work done, and has nice extras like cup mirrors, bridge spoiler and club sport steering wheel, but should not be confused with the very nice tidy examples that come up for sale on here.

So where to begin? I'm told that this is the sort of car that needs to go on Ebay, but I have a major issue with random people turning up. Though they do seem to fetch good money there. Anyone still use Auto trader? Pistonheads likely for the purists? Gumtree - scammers paradise. I'm guessing 3.5k, so near the parts alone bracket, but way too good for that.

In any event, just want to see if there is anyone on here that is currently looking for something to tinker with? If so, I'll post a more detailed thread.

Quick run down on what's been done;

Currently on 165k

Last year –Front anti roll bar all new rubbers/n/s engine mount, oil and filter, dist cap, rotor and plugs.

Fuel and brake lines have been replaced recently though not sure exactly when – will check.

Also at 151k -
Brake pipe, fuel pump hose, fuel pressure regulator, tank out, replace tank filter.
Cam gasket
Batt cable to starter, relay board to battery
147k Brake flexi hoses
Discs pads sensors
O/s engine mount
140k – front koni inserts, rear koni shocks, headlamp and frame
139k – Replacement engine fitted from 88k car, cylinder head gaskets, new clutch
138k cv boots
130k – control arm

In addition to other work

Total- bills on file for £10,500, in addition to approx £1000 that I have spent . Also recent 4 wheel alignment from Promax. Swepco gearbox refill, oil and filter.

Bits that need doing - Belts within mileage but could do with replacement with age. If 3.5k is paid I'll have this done.
Front tyres - within tread but getting on a bit.
Interior - clock, drivers seat worn on bolster but not holed, rear luggage blind, boot carpet worn.

Bodywork - shabby. Rust scabs on the rear arches, and in a few localised areas, general tidy up needed, rear quarter wells need repaired, wing bottoms. Sills, 1 side replaced, not a great job, ok for now but probably not in a few years.

Best come over and take a look, (PM me) probably described worse than is.

How much do you think it's worth ?

Well, seeing as prices are on the rise for very good examples, I think it should make 3.5k, but who knows. With the wheels, spoiler, steering wheel, mirrors worth the best part of a £1000 alone, I'd be reluctant to sell if for less than this.

Particularly being a daily driver with MOT and Tax.

Interesting to see what people think.

Speaking only from personal experience I'd forget ebay. All three of my 944's went on as auctions, then classifieds and generated nothing more than low-ball offers and stupid questions. Piston heads should be good - along with here and PCGB.

I would guess only by the bodywork that needs doing that £3.5k is towards the upper limit of what you may get but I don't think you're being unrealistic with the price.

I bought my Turbo off Gumtree - and another car I've just purchased - so it's not all bad but I've never sold on there before.

Good luck with the sale, it sounds like it could be a good project for someone

Can you post up some pictures of the interior, engine bay and bodywork as I have a friend looking for a decent project car

IMO your price is quite fair. It seems to be a good runner with many good things including a sound engine and drivetrain, a good interior with the all important ClubSport wheel, and it seems to have been cared for.

The downsides are the clock (this can be repaired cheaply), the bodywork (this will take up most of the costs, but quite a few pricey cars I have seen are not as perfect as you would expect either), and the CAT C marker (when was it crashed?). The latter IMO depending upon how bad the damage was is not a huge issue.

Remember that if you were inclined to do so, you could probably break the car quite easily for your asking price.

Thanks Chas

Appreciate your thoughts.

It is a really good runner.

The thought about breaking has crossed my mind.

I think I'll try putting it out there first to see what response I get.

Watch this space.
