I would be tempted to try 10W40 over 20W50 in an S2. As EdH regarding his oil filter blow catastrophe (that was with all sorts of filters with him using 10W60!).
Another thing. Try
http://www.emcmotorsport.com for a Kaaz diff. They seem to be proven in the 944 and you might be surprised at the price (the chap who was looking at my car was surprised when he called them:)).
Oh, and welcome to 944 ownership

. Did you make it to the TIPEC day in the end?
Have rechecked the oil spec and 20/50 is listed for slighlty warmer climate than we get here so 10/40 should be fine
The diff I may/will be fitting is gonna be the Quaiffe ATB "geared" type but will call EMC to ask about the Kaaz diff.
Yes went to TiPeC at Gaydon and also had 2 sessions on the test track

Few thoughts here.
If the front balljoints have grease nipples they are replacements ball joint kits. None of the originals or exchanges have grease nipples.
Not sure I'd go 20/50 on an S2 unless it uses oil, 10W/40 was originall specified for Europe & will be fine. Semi Synth & change it often would be my choice.
Never convinced of the efficacies of K & N & I wouldn't run one.
Why the Evans waterless coolant? Very expensive for no real gain on an S2, also has some downsides.
I'd drive it a bit before shelling out for a LSD, it is a very different beast to an Escort & unless you track it &/or drive very hard on the road you'll probably find you don't need it. I had an LSD S2 box here which someone was going to buy because he liked the sound of it, then found he didn't need it.
Checked the service history and new balljoints were fitted for MOT in 2006 so looks like regreasable ones were fitted then
Oil - as above
K & N always seems to give Marmite reactions but personally I have not hads a problem and having stripped various race/track engine there has been no excessive bore "scratching" due to dust ingress when a K & N was fitted
Evans Coolant - expensive yes but am willing to give it a try in both the Escort and the 944
LSD - PM me if you still have the box for sale as I am interested in stripping and rebuilding it and of course then fitting it - car will be taken on track and whilst the grip is high on my 944 you can never have too much !!
