Hi, I'm interested in this but have never been to a track day before and have no idea what it involves. Is it for standard cars or do you need roll cage and spare tyres? Can you provide some more info or post some useful resource links? Also, would it be an option to come as a spectator?

Cheers.

You'll need a roadworthy car and a driving licence. Normal road tyres will be fine. You will be able hire a helmet on the day, or you can pop into your local motorcycle shop and buy your own beforehand (£40 will do it. Fit is the most important thing).

There's a trackday section on tipec.net and pistonheads, but don't read into it too much: at a club event at Blyton the atmosphere is very friendly, there will be plenty of folk to give you either a passenger ride or to guide you around. Maybe read some of the comments on here about last year's event too. Oh, and it is most definitely NOT a race.

I agree with Farque. Your standard road car will be fine and you will have a lot of fun. You can come along as a spectator but you will just end up regretting you didn't book to drive.

It's not Death Race 2000 - just a chance to push your car and realise how competent it is on a track without risking your licence :D

Hope to see you there

Paul

Hi Paul and FarQue. Thanks for the responses. I think I get the picture now, should be good fun. Once I'm sure I can make it I'll get myself booked on.

Cheers.

I was in the same position as you last year. Never done a track day, except for those experience "day" thingies. Standard car, no roll cage, normal tyres etc.

You get a safety briefing where they explain the etiquette - things like where you can overtake, what to do if someone wants to overtake you, no racing etc. Let's face it, if something's right behind you, it's because they've caught you up, so by definition it must be faster. Just let it past, then you can stop worrying about it.

Lots of run-off areas where you could spin off without stacking it into a wall. In the whole day last year, I think I only saw one person come close to losing it.

There was a nice atmosphere where people were getting passenger rides in other cars. There was no competitive edge at all, just a common purpose of exploring what it's like to drive fast, without the risk of the attention of the police. I would argue that this common purpose made it a safer day than a normal drive on a motorway with all the usual clowns.

Cheers,
Bryan

I would like to point out that a quarter of the places for this event have already been taken  and this is before the latest All Torque hits doormats :bounce:

Might need to be quick or miss out on this one!

Our initial booking is for 20 cars. We may be able to add a few more if the other clubs attending don't take their slots but this is uncertain
and not in our control. If we fill our 20 and have more folk wanting to attend I will see what we can do to add numbers but even if this is possible there are limited places for the event.

That really means book soon or risk missing out - hope that clarifies

regards

Paul :D

Think I'll bring my wife's Subaru wagon this year unless anyone has any objections?

It has 3.0 flat 6 so almost compliant!
