Post subject: | Question about wheels... |
Hi I'm new to 928s and currently looking at buying one. I've found a nice looking S but notice it has 17" Club Sport wheels fitted. Question: What do I need to check to see if they have been fitted properly i.e. with appropriate spacers (if required)? Is this something I can check with a visual inspection?? The wheels look nice - but I'm already budgetting and planning on buying a standard set of wheels and going back to the original size. What are people's thoughts and experiences? Thanks |

The wheels look nice - but I'm already budgetting and planning on buying a standard set of wheels and going back to the original size. What are people's thoughts and experiences? There is a very extensively researched document available to download at http://www.landsharkoz.com/tt/ttwheels.htm which I would recommend as it gathers together a lot of technical stuff, personal experience and "received wisdom". If you want a quick summary, then I'd say that front wheel offset is considered the most important factor, if the 17" wheels have a front offset (number next to the valve or after the letters ET on the back) of 55 or greater then they're fine to use - the normal 928 front offset is 65. The back is less critical, spacers were an extra "widetrack" option for some model years, so, as long as the rears aren't touching anything you should be OK there. Finally, if buying a set of original wheels, make sure you get the 928-specific ones; some wheels such as the Design 90 were also available for the 944 but although they look the same the fitment is wrong. If you are going for original wheels for fitment reasons and don't mind too much about the looks I would recommend looking for a set of the so-called "manhole covers" which were standard equipment for most years and can consequently be picked up relatively cheaply as most owners sell them and purchase more modern-looking wheels (bear in mind though that the earlier cars such as the S had 7" wide wheels front and rear but the later S4 had 7" fronts and 8"rears). |
