Hi folks.

Just sold my 944S2 and would like some advice on buying a 928.

Which is better automatic or manual?

Apart from the outside look of an S2, is the driving experience of an S2 noticably different than that of an S4?

What sort of 928 can i get for £3000?

Hi Martin :)

Both have their advantages..manual and auto..... but around 85% of ALL 928s are auto so they are a LOT easier to find...

The autos go like s**t off a shovel so no power advantage either way really...

Also if you drive in town, you WANT an auto as the manual is not a town car really.....I use mine every day as a daily driver and I am glad its an auto,,,and i HAVE DRIVEN BOTH...

The s and S2 are 16 valve and the S4 and later are 32 valve.

The 16 valve engine is noticeably revvier and a lot prefer it to the smoother 32 valve engine...

For £3000 you wont get an S4 anyway, you will get an early S or is you are lucky an S2.

Now for my famous saying..."when I go out in the morning and start my 928 (daily driver) and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life, I get a smile that lasts all day "

I can't stop looking at 928's and I'm sure I will have one eventually. I would go here,

And read the buyers guide near the bottom of the page. There is a great artical in this months All Torque magazine too. I only live a few miles from you and I never see an 928's around here. Let us know how you get on.

You should be able to get a pretty good S2 for 3k, but unless the car is better than average you need 1k in reserve for catch up maintainance.

The S2 auto is pretty well suited to the car, but the gap between 2nd and 3 gears to a little wide.

The S2 can be woken up with a custom EZ-F igntion chip. (Developed on my S2.) There's a lot in reserve on the S2.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply guys.

I hope i can find a good 928 soon as i have always wanted one since being a young whipper snapper.

If anyone has any further information on owning a 928 i would love to hear about it.

Don't expect to run one on a shoestring!
You WILL get bills during the first year of ownership, and they will usually be over £500 a time.

It's not an easy car to work on yourself, but some jobs can be done, as it's very well put together, and can be taken apart unlike modern cars where everything is attached by "one use" clips.

Spares are fairly plentiful as they are still being "broken" by dismantlers so you should be able to obtain second hand most parts needed for the interior, plus transmissions etc.

There are only a few specialists that know how to sort 928's out. Find out where your nearest one is.
