It seems that a lot of owners have put their 928 on ebay....there are 27 listed as of today. I don't know if it's anything to do with the fact that mine made £7900 last month, but prices seem to have shot up, with plenty around the £8,000 mark.
I don't know if any of them are actually selling for these prices though. Mine was truly pristine and every job had been done in the past year at a cost of over £3,000. (and it was a good one before!) A lot of the ebay ones have faults listed such as no aircon operation, and seat bolster wear.

:( There certainly seems to be a glut of them at the moment, whilst it's testimony to their original build quality it doesn't bode well for long term values if there are so many on the market. I'm not sure that the average person looking who may be wanting to take a punt appreciates the difference between a good or bad one and the different models? :(

Buyers should beware that even expensively maintained examples can have subsequent auto transmission problems <g>

Could be a lot of owners are just fed up with fuel prices.

For someone who doesn't keep up with maintenance, fuel would be a big part of their running costs.

I like to think I'm pretty conscientious in addressing every job on the car, and even doing as much work as I can myself it means that fuel costs are a very small part of my overall outlay on the car.

Even so was thinking about Poole Quay last week and though in the end work stopped me from going on a lovely evening, I remember thinking that the £70 fuel cost for the trip was hardly an encouragement.

I don't think the market has gone mad though - nice looking 1995 GTS failed to reach reserve on eBay in past couple of days and only reached £9100. Owner claimed nothing needed doing and everything had been done (but they would wouldn't they?). They said OPC had done cambelt, all fluids and new front shocks and springs last year for an impressive sounding £3000, but I'm sure an OPC would have charged far more surely (front spring alone is about £200 from OPC)? My current 928 has a cambelt bill from OPC from 4 years ago for £2000, though they did replace the tensioner entirely.

I was a bit disappointed that my 928 failed so soon on the new owner. However I've rung and left messages but he's not returned my calls.....not that I was going to pay for the repairs, but would help him with diagnosis/parts sourcing etc, as he is new to the 928.
For instance if it DID need a new gearbox my local specialist quoted £400 plus fitting for a used (but dismantled and cleaned) one.

Did you ever buy your £800 928 rolling restoration?

Think it's the fuel panic. The price of real cars has never been cheaper. Friend of mine just bought a BMW 328i. 100K miles. 11 months MOT & very clean for a ten year old car. Engines sweet & apart from a worn release bearing everything is good. Last service cost £1500! He stole it for £650! For that price he could use it until it's dirty & throw it away....... In a year or two when people realize that the toy town cars don't last values will start to rise again. Eventually.

Yup think JJ is right fuel pricing is panicking people. I can see lots of the crap bought on scrappage coming home to roost in 3-4years as well. It is fine buying a shiny new car for the reliability is fine but for the warranty to stay valid means main dealer servicing. This can be pretty expensive if your used to a 10 year old Fiesta that the local indy/blacksmith fixes. Some of the Hyundai & Daewoo/Chevy bits are surprisingly expensive.

I never did buy the £800 928 that I was offered. i decided that it was too much work, as nothing worked on it and the owner had pulled the fuse box out.
The engine ran and it could move under it's own power, but by the time I had paid somebody to transport it to my house it would not have been worth while.

Sounds like a wise decision. Some things are better left alone.

Have you seen how much some of those fancy headlights cost! Some are over 1K each  Not too difficult to right off. As to reliability my sisters Panda seems to live at the dealership. Shes envious of the ten year old Arosa I got for my aunt that does the same mileage & is completely reliable. Even if it does only manage 40mpg. (Paid 1500 for it but don't tell the wife.)
