Hi Everyone. I am new to 928's but not new to Porsche having owned a few in the past. I was also a member of the 'other' club but now in between - don't know who to join!

I am hoping to buy a 928 which I have found but need to do the background work and hopefully learn a bit more from you guys!

I have found 928.org.uk but its confusing me

Is it a forum or just an information site? I can see lots of info which is great ( the buyers guides are great) but there are no contact details of people to say you want to take part in events or chat about 928's

Am I missing something??

My first question would be - what kind of money would a solid and sound 'off the road car' but believed to be ok 86 LHD S2, be worth? i.e. it may have a few gremlins and it will need some re commisioning, brakes, pipes, hoses etc but the engine and box are fine because with a battery it runs and its complete.

928.org.uk is the brainchild of Angus Fox, who has done more than anyone to create a 928 owner community in the UK. He hosts and administers the site using his own time and money.

I've just had a look and it is hard to find the links for the mailing list (there's no web-based forum, but an email list which is very active - at least 10 posts so far today). I have the link to join from the admin email sent periodically to list members:

The website is mainly designed as a place to buy and sell 928s, provide news and reports of gatherings, and to archive a raft of how-to articles. But really the main 928uk activity is via the list. It's a fantastic resource and has a wonderful atmosphere.

There are only two 'formal' (though nothing could be further from formality than a 928 meet!) meets a year in October in Surrey, and December Oxfordshire. I think even these meetings are technically organised via the PCGB 928 register people who are kind enough to give their time, as the 928uk list is effectively a club with no rules or officials.

Look forward to seeing your first post on the list. It may take Angus a day or so to process your request to be added but in the meantime you can also wade through archives of old posts via the link I posted above.

928.org.uk is not a conventional forum (like this one) its just an email list, i.e. you just send them an email and then wait for the responses. It's very active and has a number of 928 Gurus.

If your thinking of buying a 928 I strongly recommend you have a 928 expert go with you to check it over, as you've no doubt read on the 928.org.uk website. There are unfortunately still a number of very poor examples around that should be avoided but these are rapidly being broken up.

There are many 928 owners dotted around the country and you shouldn't have trouble finding someone to help you out.

The car I am looking at has been in professional storage and unused but annually checked for many years. Its not some wreck sitting in a garden! The place where it is kept is warm and dry and there is plenty of air flow around it so condensation shouldnt be an issue. Until then it was well looked after by someone who had it for many years and who had money to spend looking after it.

Going by e bay, its looking like about £1000-£1500 for wrecks/non runners etc so I am thinking that about £2k would be fair for a sound non runner on an 'as is' basis which I am sure will need a few jobs doing. What do you guys think about £2k??

I am going for the 928 as its bigger than my last Porsche (968) and I need 4 seats so it can be a family tourer, the 968 was way too crampt in the back and I gave up in the end trying to fit a child seat. 911s are also a touch crampt but the 928 seems to be a lot better and I also love the look of them, they still look very cool today.

Hello & Welcome - Good luck with your search - buy the Porsche 928 buyers guide - at £7.50 its worth it. As always when buying any car the "buyer be-aware-and you get what you pay for" this of course applies also to the 928 - buy the best you can afford and enjoy it-restos at the moment may not be viable-unless you have deep pockets?

Good bunch of guys on here that can help you-might even go and look at one with you if you are in there area.

My view is £800 to a grand maybe a touch more if paint is really good. Lots of variables though. Whats the history like? Miles?, interior condition? Retrims are mega money and decent interiors hard to come by. Is it an auto, manual, sunroof?
If its sat it'll probably need tyres as well.

Not a 928 man myself, but there's plenty of friendly advice on here. Why not pop along to a local regional meet - there may well be a 928 there and the owner will (no doubt) be more than happy to chat.

The car I am looking at is an Auto 1986 LHD S2 in blue with a sunroof. Paint ok, Interior ok, Just not been on the road in a few years, in the same ownership since the 90's (now has a superb GTS) Just need as a bit of tidying and commissioning and i suspect the air con will be iffy but runs on a battery. It doesnt look like its got wet or damp or anything has started to eat the wires. LHD is ok for me as I have a place in France and that would be an ideal tourer and car for there.

I would be very pleased if they take £800 - £1000 for it but suspect they might ask more considering the prices of some real doggy looking ones on e bay, this is a pretty genuine car.

Got the 928 guide in my faves on Amazon so will get that, along with the Brian Long book which looks good.

Are 928's really as wallet busting as people make out?? I am currently driving a fairly new Mercedes and the cash I have spent on that for servicing etc is eye watering, not to mention the items replaced under warranty, luckily not coming out of my pocket but still add up to 4 figures. My 'old' Porsches were ok, never went wrong and not much ever got spent.

You'll probably need to spend a couple of thousand to get the car sorted, and then jobs will crop up from time to time. Don't forget the car is 25 years old! I bought a 1989 928 S4 last year and so far have spent about £2,000 (mainly on air con repair and sump gasket replacement) plus it has a fault on it now that won't be £100 to fix that's for sure.
However compared to similar cars the costs are very reasonable. Bearing in mind that you can buy the car for a couple of thousand and get it sorted for about the same again. what else could you get for the money that would compare?

Maybe worth a few hundred more then if paint and interior good. But if stood for a few years you will need new tyres and a decent brake service, plus engine service. Probably a new battery. Just off the top of my head.
LHD sounds like it would work well for you though?!

Can recommend both the books ... very good and interesting reads.
