Rattle from torque converter?

Post subject:  Rattle from torque converter?
Went out in the 928 S4 tonight, thought I'd try the kickdown from about 5 mph and all was fine....got home and the car sounds like a bag of spanners when sat at tickover.
Noise sounds like it's coming from the rear underneath but cannot be sure, lifting the bonnet you can't hear it. Loudest when stood behind the car. Sounds like clatter/rattle and is rhythmic. cla cla cla cla cla cla cla. Any ideas? Torque tube? Torque converter? Still drives perfectly.

I've had a look underneath the car this morning and the clattering seems to be coming from the torque converter. I guess I need a new one. Is there an oil resevoir on it?

Hi :)

Torque converter is filled from the autobox (part of same system) so check auotbox fluid level....while engine running etc....

ATF level is fine. I'll check the flexplate and bolts on the torque tube, if that's all OK it's time to get the cheque book out again!

What could cause a rattle in the area of the torque converter? I'm not too sure what is behind that cover at the front of the auto transmission. I'm guessing the torque tube connects to it. Could the noise be coming from the other end of that, say the flex plate?

It could be a cracked flex plate that would rattle but if it varies with the engine speed when in neutral it could be a vane or vanes in the TC that have broken loose. Giving it some beans would up the load & could quite easily fracture a weld if it is already iffy. Find a local auto specialists & let him have a listen.

It's gone in to the local specialist. They've said they will have to remove the transmission to find out what is wrong....but it might be some bearing or other on the input shaft.

They've said it is 8-10 hours labour just to remove the transmission.

No it isnt.... I could pull the box in around 3 hours...Paul A could probably pull it in 1 hour lol :)

8 - 10 hours to pull ,find problem, rebuild and put back in...maybe,,,,,but if its 8 - 10 hours to pull it....go somewhere that knows 928s....

I think they must mean that? Eight hours to do the whole job. They are a well known Porsche specialist. I'm not sure I want to sell the car after all, despite this latest problem. It's still hardly any money to pay for a genuine supercar.
