Post subject:  928 Auto Gearbox Problems

Hi

I have just joined. I am after some advice regarding my 1988 928 Auto Gearbox.

last year, it decided to stop changing gear. I would stop the car, turn it off (in true I.T Style) and all would be well til the next time.

Then, when in reverse, it would think about it for about 5 mins, then decide to move.

Recently, it stopped changing gear entirely, even manually in 2nd & 3rd. Somebody told me it could be down to low gearbox oil level or accumalation of sludge.

Just had the oil changed (cost me £280 and I supplied the sump gasket and filter!) and the reversing problem has gone away. It will change from 2nd to 3rd manually, but will not go into 4th when shifted in "D" and will not change automatically at all.

There is no clunking or juddering from the box. I am at my wits end!

Can anyone Help Please

The gearbox oil needs to be checked with the engine RUNNING and after a drive to warm it up. The oil level should show normal with the engine running. With the engine running (and the car level on a ramp) shift through the gears a couple of times then put it in PARK, then the filler cap can be removed and the oil topped up. The cap needs to be replaced before the engine is turned off! If it's been filled with the engine off it will be at least a litre low on fluid.

However it sounds like your autobox may be goosed. These are available second hand on ebay, I think there are a couple on at the moment, and they are no more than you paid to get the oil changed on yours. Of course you'll have to get it fitted, I reckon you could do it for £500, including the gearbox.
