Just saw this on the bay ....

Mine would have looked like that in the past! Not so much now.

Depends how you look at it. It will be interesting to see if it gets any takers, because although it does have a bit of bodywork to be done, to see such a genuine car in a nice colour combo is pretty rare? There was a white one around 6 months ago that was even lower mileage i think? Not sure what it sold for.

You would have to be certifiable to pay even the £7950 starting price for an S2 with those declared faults (and no doubt many others undeclared and even not known by the owner).

I defer here to Angus Fox who knows a thing or two about these cars, and whose latest buyers' guide (Jan 2010) states £3999 top whack for an S2.

Sad but true.

Gorgeous colour though - in mid-80s a colleague bought a brand new S2 in this colour, so I always think of this colour when I think of pre-S4s.

I agree, which is why it'll be interesting to see if it goes. I would pay him £4k now for it though without thinking. As long as the paperwork is good as well, which it sounds like it is.

Better to have a start price of say £1,000 and put an 8k reserve on it, at least it would get the bids coming in....although I doubt it would reach anything like 8k.

I guess the issue is these cars are just undervalued. If it was a 911 in the same condition there would be no doubt it would be worth £10k+
As you say it would have been better to start lower and see where it ended up.

I think the 928 is almost forgotten at the moment, although that's good for us. I wanted a "supercar" and there's just nothing else you can buy for £5,000 or less that comes anywhere near.
People say the costs are high but that's the case with many cars of this type. My friend bought a Ferrari 400i and the engine started making a light tapping sound, still ran OK. "Valve guide has dropped Sir" His repair quote? "You'll need to take both heads off and replace them all Sir" £15,000. Air conditioning, forget it. Hardly worked when it was new. Superb car though make no mistake.
You think 928 spares can be dear, we have it made, try finding second hand parts for a Ferrari, Aston etc. Second hand gearbox on ebay for £200? You must be joking. Or even my friend with her Lotus Carlton. The car broke down and it took nearly 5 months to locate a replacement ECU, eventually purchased from the USA.

You make very valid points and comparisons Lightning.

I have a theory that the 928 has an undeservedly bad reputation (money pit, electrical nightmares etc) because it sits in the context of the wider Porsche community (forums/clubs like this). That community is largely made up of 911s and 944s, both of which benefit from a huge ecosystem of expert and reasonably priced independent garages, and for which parts are readily available and commensurately cheap (heck I could probably find any part I need to restore a 356, such is the vibrant remanufacturing and restoration culture surrounding that model). A related point is that Porsches of the same vintage as the 928 are much simpler cars so easier to work on for DIY or garages (= cheaper). remember the 928 was designed from a clean sheet (the very first such Porsche) using the best technology available and with a money-no-object philosophy.

So 928 owners and prospective owners are mostly exposed to chat/opinions coming from that broader perspective, rather than say your example of chatting with classic Ferrari owners. People view the 928 through 911 (older) and 944-tinted spectacles.
