I fitted an original from Porsche on my S4 and it cost nearly £60 . I wouldn't think an alternative would make much difference to performance, as the fuel injection would compensate for any change in air flow.

Hi :)

Its a cost thing...you can use a K&N quite happily for 50,000 miles for around £60 ...that would be around 5 original Porsche ones....

Plus personally I like the slightly different intake noise from them.....some say they give a small HP increase although if so its maybe 1 to 2 hp maximum...

All the best Brett :)

Yes the cost is an issue, and nobody seems to do a "pattern" air filter for the S4. Some say that the oil impregnated K & N filter does a better job of filtering the air.

Bought and installed the Mahle Micro Star part which only cost £25. It didn't come in Porsche box but is labelled with correct part number.

Thanks Guys ... will give it some thought.
Heard about issues with the K+N having too much oil on it and causing issues. Maybe I would just need to be careful when re oiling?

I saw the Pipercross on ebay that was quite cheap.

Decisions, decisions!

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul :)

You are correct its the REOILING thats the problem...some people put on too much and do not let it drain for a day or two...as per instructions...

Easy answer is my way...buy a new one every 50,000 miles.....no re-oiling needed :)

All the best Brett :)

Just bought my new Filter off ebay form Doctor Car parts for £15 inc postage.

Genuine MAHLE Micro-Star filter LX311
Same part as Genuine POrsche.

All 928 filters - need to make sure you fit it the correct way up for it to work correctly with the air flow
This filter has the up arrows on the end so you can't go wrong.
Its suprising how many 928 owners fit their air filters upside down!

AIR FILTER - PORSCHE 928 4.5/4.7/5.0/5.4 PETROL LX311
Doctor Car Parts
Kens Auto Spares
2 Carey Road Bulwell
Nottingham NG6 8AT
Located Opposite KFC in Bulwell (near to the Springfield retail park which has the Morrisons Supermarket).

Steve you have a gift for finding best parts prices (I remember those amazingly cheap ignition parts you sourced from place in Stoke).

£15 is brilliant for the filter. I paid tenner more for same part from US which is usually good value.

Have added DoctorCarParts to my 'parts' bookmarks.

Wonder why it doesn't fit a 1985 model?

I knew it was a good idea to stray across onto this side of the forum. Another parts man to add to the list.

I know they're probably not quite as cheap, but PCT in Coventry sold me all filters/plugs for my S2 for £50 all in (oil filter genuine, rest was Mahle Knecht).

As for the K&N air filters IME they generally need reoiling after around 20,000 miles. On a previous car, it did help it rev a little better compared to a new clean stock item.

Hi Watchcam

I would give them a ring and ask why it doesn't cover a 1985 model year?
They were very helpful with mine and asked for the registration so they could check it was the correct part before shipping.

Very Helpful.

Thanks might well do that. I know I should just get on with it, but can't make up my mind what to fit.
I keep wanting to fit on original air filter as i want the car to be 100% original, and then I think what difference will fitting an after-market make? I should get a life!

Frazerpart sell the OEM air filter for £23 plus VAT....I paid nearly £60 from the Porsche dealer. Frazerpart also sell the OEM side/fog light assemblies on ebay for £140 including VAT. (£350 plus VAT from Porsche) When they arrive from Frazerpart they are Bosch units, so somebody is making a fortune on them at Porsche.
