Hi all,i'm new to this forum so please dont flame me if i make one or two embarrassing errors with my huge lack of knowlege on all things Porsche.I've never owned a Porsche before, but really fancy a 928 with which to soak up the motorway miles and traffic, travelling to and from the coast on a regular basis.I 'think' i'd like either an S2 or S4,but i'm not sure what equipment you can get on each model. I'm not really too bothered about mileage as long as it has been well cared for mechanically, and i also want the bodywork and interior to be tidy.I would like a full leather interior, heated seats, pas, cruise control and a/c as my 'essential options.I would really appreciate any advice with regards what i should expect to pay,how much these two models really differ, and if anyone knows of any likely candidates out there which are for sale, that i might have missed whilst scouring the ads.All advice and experiences greatefully received. Many thanks,Mike

Hi Mike :)

Whereabouts are you ?

928 owners will always help by looking at cars for you, I am in Bournemouth if it helps...

All 928s have ALL of your requirements but one proviso...

Although 928s are mechanically bulletproof, its always the electrics that play up and most of those requirements have electrical parts lol, so its REALLY important on a 928 to make sure EVERYTHING electrical works, oh and as a final comment, when you see in an advert "the aircon needs re-gassing" take my word it doesn't, it needs rebuilding totally (think 2 grand)

But 928s are great cars and my famous saying says it all....

When I go out in the morning (daily driver) and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life it puts a smile on my face all day :) :) :)

All the best Brett :)

I think that there have been a few similar posts recently to this one. The best you can do is take the advice above and make sure everything works when you get the car, as I did. However these cars are 15+ years old and you will get things going wrong.
I bought a faultless 928 S4 3 months ago for £5,000. Since then I've spent over £2,000 on it, including £700 on the aircon, which had almost certainly been "regassed for sale" and another £700 on a new sump gasket (not sure if this was really necessary)
It's a major plus if you can do some jobs yourself, such as repairing an electric window mechanism or replacing window switches. Also there are only a few specialists that know about 928's....see if there's one near you. It's a 50 mile round trip to mine.
My 928 will do 25mpg driven carefully. The S4 has almost all the features you list as standard, and I think they are standard on the S2 also. Options seemed to be things like heated seats and a sunroof, although I've yet to see one without. There's always at least 10 cars for sale on Ebay, plus at least 10 on "Classic Cars For Sale" although the latter site seems a bit optimistic on prices.
Look at the history file with the car (there isn't one? walk away) and see what's been done to it. Make sure the cam belt has been done recently, as failure could cost you £3,000+, and has the aircon been overhauled? (if not set aside £1000+) are there any oil leaks? Rust should not be a major problem, as the body is part aluminium, and the steel parts were galvanised.
The 928 is a superb car, and a bargain at the moment. What other "supercar" could you buy in mint condition for £5,000?

Hi, welcome to the forum. I agree with the guys, plenty of good advice is available on the forum from 928 owners who have owned the cars for a while and know what sort of things to expect and look out for.

My additional recomendation to the above would be to purchase the, "928 Essential buyers" guide available from Amazon and the like, which at £7 is well worth it and to a 928 virgin (which I was only a few months ago) it's a great source to read before you go to look and have with you when you are visiting a car for sale. Good Luck with your search. Cheers RT :D
