A whirring noise has developed, most noticeable at motorway speeds. What could this be? It remains if you put the transmission into neutral and let the engine idle (while still doing 70 mph) I can't work out if it's coming from the front or the back. Could it be a wheel bearing...if so how can I work out which one? |

Could it be a wheel bearing...if so how can I work out which one? Hi ![]() It may be a wheel bearing....here is how you find out.... Go out at night...wind down BOTH windows.... Find a quiet reasonably sized roundabout.... Go round it several times normally....i.e clockwise...and LISTEN.... Then go round it anticlockwise (watch out for coppers lol) and LISTEN You can also do this in something like a quiet supermarket car park at night... Now.....IF the noise is WORSE one way and vanishes the OTHER way,,, its normally a wheel bearing..... Let me know which way and I will tell you which it is..... OR, you could jack up the car and spin all 4 wheels and listen for rumbling noises on one wheel....but the driving way is usually easier to tell..... All the best Brett ![]() |

Thanks for the info. I will take a look tomorrow. Can I replace a wheel bearing myself? Are there special tools needed? The specialist says about 3 1/2 hours labour. |
