Hi All,

Been lurking around this forum ( and Rennlist) for a couple of month or so, and have always loved Porsches especially the 964 and 928. I have known a few people over the years run a 964 every day with only an acceptable amount of cost/drama and was wondering how many of the 928 owners on this site use their sharks as everyday transport?

I currently run a 17 yr old Merc SL, so am at least partly used to older cars' electrical gremlins (I too now own a multimeter!), expensive parts and poor fuel economy. The 928, however, seems to be in a different league altogether complexity-wise...Shock and Awe are what I experienced when I explored the 928 workshop manuals!

One of the Rennlist posts lists a set of criteria that predicts a miserable ownership of a 928, and I remember 2 of these were:

Making the 928 yr only drive

Not being pretty handy with a set of spanners

What do you think?

I do about 5k a year and am not entirely clueless with electrical fiddling...could a half decent one be my only car?

Cheers everyone,

Paul

P.S. Brett if yr reading this, do you know anything about the S4 at Bournemouth Motors for 5995?

Hi Paul :)

First mine is a daily driver.....for 5 years now....

No mechanical problems AT ALL !

The engine , tranny etc are basically bulletproof...

Electrics ARE fun lol, good job you own a Multimeter...but its never anything drastic, its usually stuff like electric boot release, or windows or rear wiper etc etc...

I didn't know about that S4 (got a link ?)...but I will happily go look at it for you if you wish ??

All the best Brett :)

Hi Brett,

thanks for replying. That sounds quite encouraging...

This is the car near you (if the link has worked), should the adjustable 'racing' suspension and lowering be ringing alarm bells? I only wondered if you knew the car because it's local to you and seems interesting...

Cheers,

Paul

Hi :)

This is what THEY say....

2 Doors, Automatic, Coupe, Petrol, Grey. Full Porsche Service History, Just Serviced, MOT Until May 2010, Cambelt Changed, £1500 GT Split Rim Alloy Wheels, S4 Bodykit, Full Black Leather Grey Piped Sports Interior, Upgraded Sound System, Clifford Alarm & Immobiliser, Onboard Computer, Upgraded GT Dash & Steering Wheel, Air Conditioning, Cruise Control, Full Racing Adjustable Suspension, Lowered By Porsche 2.5ins, Front & Rear Double Piston Calipers, Had Engine Compression Test (no cracks)Head Light Washers, Electric Windows & Mirrors, Electric Sunroof, Call Jay on 01202 391 889 for More Details www.bournemouthcarsltd.co.uk, £5,995

This is what "I" say lol....

Cambelt changed WHEN ?

Split rim wheels damaged (the one in picture, others may be worse)

S4 Bodykit... <<< lol standard S4...

Cannot see dash but id bet its standard S4

Interior looks ok but as usual they cleverly did NOT show the drivers bolster, it WILL be ripped (£70 ish to replace)

ALL S4 and 86 S2 have adjustable height suspension (nothing to do with Racing)

Lowered << lollll that looks higher than most S4s i have seen and my S2 is a LOT lower than that on standard suspension adjustment...

All S4s have 4 pot Brembos :)

So, either they do not know much about 928s or as usual with dealers they are a bit prone to exaggeration :)

Its also a bit overpriced....by around 2k

Happy to go look at it for you if you wish though ??

All the best Brett :)

Nice one Brett – have got a couple of days off next week, will go and have a look for myself and check the mileage, history and overall condition. I suspect, like you, that it is overpriced, but if I really like it or can do a deal, I will perhaps take you up on your kind offer to inspect it.

Cheers

Paul

Agree with Brett, most of that blurb sounds like 'traders exaggeration' and I doubt if they've got a clue how to service it. I'm popping into JMG tomorrow so might take a peak if I've got time.
