Could anybody give me a rough idea of how much it would be to sort out some rust "bubbling" around one of the door handles on a S2? The body is black. I ask as there is a car for sale that is of interest to me on Ebay that looks very well maintained but the rust is a small issue.

Thanks in advance,

RB

Unless you can get a new door skin for a 928. Probably unlikley. (Another door from porscheapart?) The rust will have to be cut out & new metal welded in place. The window mech & handle will have to come off. Then it will have to be blended in & painted. Black is a bad colour to match as it shows every defect. It will probably need blowing into the front & rear wings so your doing most of the side! Depends how busy your local bodyshops are. Could be anything from £700 to £1200. Depending where in the country you are! Up north £700 is possible. Be warned that some shops will only use filler & that won't last. Be sure theres no rust anywhere else.

The doors are aluminium, so they don't "rust" in the same way that steel would.

If it's the car on ebay I think (there's only one black one on there at the moment), then that small amount of bubbling isn't worth fixing; if you find it that unsightly, don't buy the car, otherwise use its presence to negotiate a discount, live with it and worry about getting it sorted if it starts to get much worse.

I've got a small patch of bubbling on the bottom of my door that was there when I bought the car 5 years ago and it hasn't changed noticeably since.

 Well you still can't use filler or it will fall out if the door is knocked. It should just need preping & painting but will probably cost about the same. :) You could just touch in the damaged area to make it a bit better but you won't get it right without doing the whole panel.

That car looks nice, but if you spent £700 plus repairing that door you could put it towards one without the fault on it.
For the extra you could possibly buy mine. It's the later 928 S4 with the digital dash, and the paintwork is flawless. Not a single stone chip, rust patch, dent, or scratch. Everything's been done (mechanically that is, cam belt, flex plate, air con, etc) and the mileage is lower on mine, plus the interior is in better shape too.

I've just been given the chance to buy a vintage car that I've been trying to get off the owner for over two years.

I'm trying to work out a way to finance it without selling the 928, but it's £5500.

I've sent my 944S into the body shop last week and he is cutting away the rust around the wheel arch and sill and welding in new metal for an original quote of £400. However when I dropped it off we both had a walk around the car and spotted some rust starting to bubble up under the rear drivers side window and he said he would do that as well and also touch in a chip in the paintwork on the drivers door while he was at it. All for £500!
I know he wont take the p#ss because he's a friend of a friend and I've taken my wifes car to him already. I honestly don't know where some people get their prices from. One guy I took it to wanted £1200!
I can't see how anyone can justify £700 for a rust patch on a door!

I am with you Brucey. Bodyshops earn more money than bankers.
I need some body work and not looking forward to it.

Bottom line is it should be a reasonable hourly rate plus cost of paint. Thats it surely!?

The black one discussed above ... how much would paint and materials cost? Maybe £100 max?
Is it really going to take 10 hours at £60 an hour to complete? I doubt it. If it is the sprayer should take some speed!

Also - at £60/hour working 5 day weeks, at 7 hour days x48 weeks a year is a salary of over £100k! (obviously less costs, but often several people work on several cars at the same time so split down costs wouldnt be that high)
And you can never get booked in straight away so they must be booked solid. So the arguement they don't work these hours falls away.
I think I am in the wrong trade?? - I might start a spraying business ..... will offer discounts to Tipec members!

Hi :)

The main guy who sprays 928s is called Dave Mac in Hertfordshire (I think)

He charges around 4 to 5k to respray a 928 totally (interior all stripped out plus glass out etc)

He does absolutely brilliant work but personally I would rather spend that on my Nitrous :)

All the best Brett :)

I've seen 928 body parts on ebay, front wings, doors etc. If the door needs welding etc it might be cheaper to get a good used door and spray it to match the car? Unless you are lucky and it's already the same colour.

If that's all that is wrong with the bodywork on that car it wouldn't put me off.

I am going to strip my bumpers, wings, tailgate and door off the car and take them to a body shop. I might even have a go at preping them. That should make it as cheap as possible?

Didn't some one say early on that 928 doors are aluminium. So it won't be rusty, so all comments about welding are irrelevant. I suspect that there is a bit of electrolytic action taking place. So it'll be strip the door, etch prime, primer filler & respray. I'd guess around 3-500 quid depending on how long it takes to dismantle & the local labour rate. I've just had a quote for 250 to repaint the jag bonnet, so it purely comes down to strip & rebuild time.

Not with black Jim. It's a bad colour & shows every mark. The prep will need to be good & 10 hours will be about right. Depends on finish but if you not bothered why do it! It needs to be right. The original colour will have faded so unless you do the front & rear wing it will stand out like a saw thumb. Just doing the effected area & touching in will be £100 & look not too bad. Depends what the rest of it's like. In the south everything costs double. Risky business did say "Rust" which you don't get on ali'

Thanks for all your comments. My mistake calling the problems rust, rather than bubbling. Seems like its quite a small area and thus wouldnt put me off what seems to a decent car.

Thanks for the offer Lightning but I'm actually after a S2 as I prefer the styling of them.
