Greetings to all,

Just wondered if anybody knows whether it would be possible to uprate a S model's suspension and brakes to later S4 types? I guess the all knowing Paul Anderson could tell me, but curious to know if I'm wasting his time asking first.

Also, as a 928 buyer to be, when is the next meeting of any kind - I live in London.

Thanks,

Can't answer the first one but depending on where you live we are close to a London meet, the SELNK group details are here:- http://tipec.net/region_southeastlondon.php I've got a 928 in my group.

Unfortunately you have just missed the Tilford meeting - possibly the best gathering of 928's in UK.
There will be a meeting of 928's at The Merry Miller (near Oxford) on 5th Dec (Saturday) allowing for the time of year there is sometimes a prize for the dirtiest car.... see http://www.928.org.uk for more details......

Hi :)

It depends on year...as an example my S2 (85/86 ONLY) has S4 suspension and brakes, i.e the 4 pot Brembos instead of the normal 2 pot Brembos usually on S/S2 models....

Soooo.... yes its possible, but you would need a LOT of bits....just roughly....all 4 struts , with calipers/discs etc, all the ABS stuff including the ABS ECU ...plus a LOT of rewiring....some of the ball joints and suspension arms.....and probably a lot of other bits I have not thought of....

Having said all that, the S brakes are pretty good so you would need a really good reason to upgrade everything, PLUS a couple of thousand pounds for parts and labour as a rough guess :( ..... unless you had a donor car spare (S4) which would make it cheaper....

All the best Brett :)

Surely you could uprate the brakes with S4 bits & ignore the ABS. That is what I've done on my my 944 where it has late S2 bits with ABS but I just chopped the unused wires off!

Yup wasn't fitted until 87 on 944 & was an option even then until 89, never fitted to a 924 or early 911. My car didn't have it before. Lots of cars run around without ABS, the TR7 did, I was driving (as I'm sure were you) for a long time before it even was thought of.

I don't think I've ever had the ABS kick-in on the public road, guess I need to drive faster!

And in response to the OP, yes it is possible to put the later suspension and brakes on an early car; there are various solutions e.g. get a full S4 suspension from a parts car, just put the later calipers on by using adapters/carriers, fitting new shock absorbers, getting one of the hypercoil spring sets from the USA etc. etc. However, I don't think retro-fitting ABS has ever been done.

It all really comes down to what you want - if you just feel the suspension needs "refreshing" or if you want an upgrade. Paul Anderson is probably a very good person to ask as I doubt his 928 race car (which is based on a pre-S I believe) is on its original suspension.
