Can I replace a faulty wheel bearing myself? Are there any special tools needed? On my BMW it was just a 32mm socket to get the nut off, and a torque wrench to tighten it again.

possibly a press, and a geo afterwards.

Assuming it is the same as the 944 then mine was FT & needed the hub heating to get it out, although another I've done was much easier.
It is a BFH & a drift & a bit of care & technique. A vice on a bench makes it easier. The manual waffles about a press & various special tools.

Front or rear Lightning, and for front inner or outer? Procedure varies with the easiest being front outer which are the ones I could do by myself using just an allen key and handfuls of grease.

I also changed front inners but had to take hubs to Porscheshop to press old bearings out and insert the new ones - the big problem was removing the seal without damage. If you don't have a press the yes it is about sneaking access to oven and freezer when someone's not looking!

Nut on rear hubs has very high torque so you need huge breaker bar/scaffolding tube or preferably air tools.

I don't think 928 requires any realignment after bearing change but am sure Brett will know if I'm wrong!

Well, I have to identify which bearing is noisy first. I have not done this yet due to the weather (I can get the car into my garage but have to work on it outside) plus the car has been in at Loe Bank Motors having the aircon fixed. I meant to get them to have a look at the bearing but forgot.
I'm going to have a go at it myself first. I managed it on the Z3 and yes I had to use a 3 foor breaker bar.
What size is the nut that holds the axle/bearings on?

Hi :)

You should not need an alignment after bearing changes but I think the rear nuts are a HUGE torque (think 8 foot bar) lol... and Adrian is correct, a press is preferable for inners...

All the best Brett :)

Yup I assumed it was a front one I must admit
I was always taught never to do a single bearing & on say the front always do inner & outer together & always have. You should also not put a new bearing onto the old race as they are matched. I always change the seal & can generally get them out with a BFH and a drift & the new one in with a socket & hammer. The inner on mine was very very tight & even with heat took some getting out & the new one was reluctant to go in. Yet when we did Paul's that was much easier.

32mm at the rear. Try using a long 3/4" breaker bar and jump up and down on the end.

i just presumed as the hub was coming off it would need realigning.

another trick to remove bearing shells is to mig a thick ring around the inside then cool it, it shrinks it. Works everytime.
