Hi  Any is the real answer... Let me explain... There are 2 types of Antifreeze you can buy... Type 1...... Methanol based...(says it on can) ....reasonable antifreeze qualities with one HUGE disadvantage....it EVAPORATES when it gets HOT lolllll.... DONT USE IT....although its VERY cheap... Type 2...... Ethylene Glycol based...(says it on can)....thats the one to use....it also contains the aluminum protector that our ally engines need Quantity...our engines contain 16 ltrs in total...so if changing coolant completely you will need 8 ltrs of Anti Freeze plus 8 ltrs of water...mixed. Brett, it is now hugely more complicated than that! This link gives a quick run down on the various types & some of the sub types. http://www.aa1car.com/library/2004/us120426.htm I run Halfords Long Life (orangey) one in the 944 with no problems but not sure if it is recommended. I would recommend using distilled or filtered water though in an all ali engine. The US guys seem quite picky about this & I've done it ever since running the Rover V8 which is all ali. |

Hi Sorry you are wrong Jim...there are ONLY 2 basic types as above.....its the base chemicals that matter..all the rest is just modern and non needed add ons...and don`t forget the 928 was designed in the early 70`s... I use any basic Ethylene Glycol and its fine as long as 50/50 all year round.... Oh and your site is American and most of it is total rubbish..... All the best Brett

It is the BASE Chemicals that are different & get it wrong & in the least you end up with a gooey mess to flush, at the worst it can kill water pumps & engines. The market has changed hugely in the last 15-20 years! Heavily driven by the Japanese & their all alloy engines. Hi Ok....so if you are right....I must ask my Snap-On guy for a new Anti Freeze hydrometer as mine only reads Ethylene Glycol and its just been replaced....but somehow I do not think he has one for the new orange/pink whatever colour non organic and politically correct antifreezes...lol. To answer the original questioner again.... Go out and buy 2 x 5 ltr containers of any Ethlyene Glycol based anti freeze (on can) then mix 8 ltrs of it.....50/50 with plain water from the tap and you will be fine.... IMO use the red or more commonly known as OAT (Organic Acid Technology) antifreeze (they have Propylene Glycol). It has far superior rusting properties to it compared to Ethylene Glycol antifreeze and generally lasts longer. However, do not under any circurmstances mix the two. I did once a few years ago and almost paid the price (I thought my HG was gone as the coolant was congealing... I flushed it out as soon as I found out). But OAT cannot be used in systems where soldering is present since it will attack the solder. But it has been shown to be better on aluminium. I think someone on this forum or Porsche GB suggested to go to Audi or VW for the red stuff which adheres to the same grades that the Porsche item does. http://www.geocities.com/dtmcbride/home ... reeze.html As for your addendum tr7v8, it's something that has been debated regarding Pug 306 Heater matrixes. I never had mine die in my GTi-6 with 120k on the clock, as nor did others on the whole the OAT... The Jag case is all well too known on all of the alloy engines. |
