Looking for help.

The truth be told I've been looking at 911's, the only model that ticks all the boxes is the 964 (power steering,hydraulic clutch/tiptronic more modern ride quality). Just recently however 928's have come to my attention and also tick most of the right boxes and I'm decidedly tempted.

Now the dilemma which model is best, needs to be at least an S or S2 for performance (current vehicles 924's & 944S2) but is an S4 that much better or is it to complicated. Seems alot more S4's for sale. I presume as always condition is more important than model however. What is the price range for these cars?

Also recommendations as to which manual/auto (have been considering a tiptronic 964 as Karen prefers to drive an auto but I would rather stir a gearbox) is the clutch pedal and gear change heavy.

Please pro's/con's of these cars so I can decide do I want one (need one)

At the minute £5 - 6,000 will get you a very nice S4 ( or an absolutely mint S2).
Manual cars are very difficult to come by as about 85% of production was Auto but don't be put off by the auto option. It works very well with the 4.7 or 5.0 engine and the Mercedes auto transmission. You can be lazy around town with it in "D" but out on the open road you can shift the selector and drive the car like a manual. Keep the revs up and you can have a lot of fun

If you are really serious I would recommend you take a look at http://www.928.org.uk which is dedicated to the model. There is an email list you can join so that you can ask lots of questions before making a decision. As with any Porsche the trick is to take your time, do your homework and find a good car that has been properly maintained.

I'm in the same position at moment. I've decided yes I want a 928 and I think a manual box so a GT or GTS(if you can find one). Both are packed with statistics and specs plus what to look for. Also GT Porsche December 2007 issue in shops right now has a 10 page review of the whole range.
For £5 - £6k there are a lot of S4 's going, add another £3k for a sportier GT manual looking at Pistonheads and Autotrader sites at moment but get the one's you look at checked out thoroughly as you should any other Porsche.

Thanks, already been looking on 928.org and gained a lot of info.

Thought by posting here I would get less biased veiws on merits plus get some of the down sides of ownership.

Will have to find some 928's at dealers and try the different models out.

Anyone else got a view? Has anyone got both a 928 & 964 to give a comparison!

I doubt you will find many 928s at dealers as most are sold privately or on Ebay.

My best advice is to take another owner of a 928 with you when looking to buy, you will find we are a friendly lot who will come with you..

Looking on Piston Heads,Auto Trader etc within 70 miles there is approx 6-10 cars at dealers. Mainly S4's but a couple of S2's as well. Are the extra 16 valves a liability.

Unless they're specialist dealers they probably don't know what they've got so take a few for test drive by all means to get a feel but although 928.org hasn't got much at moment they will probably have the loved for cars coming up for sale, usually like buses, none for ages them a whole load of them at once.

The 32 valve engine is fine but its only in the S4s and later...which means around 6k upwards...

The best of the S2s (16 valve) is the last year of them (like mine) which is an 86 ...this has the 16 valve engine (310 hp) and the S4 brakes and suspension....

And yes Paul Anderson knows EVERYTHING about fixing 928s once you have bought one and hes around 1/3 of the labour of an OPC (hes in Stroud)
