Post subject:  928 S2 Purchase..!

This Saturday coming I will be entering the World of the TransAxle Porsche by collecting a 928 S2 I struck a deal on at the end of last week; historically I have only had dealings with the 911 [one 912], so very much looking forward to getting involved with this V8 Beast..

The car I have chosen [B752 OSB], was advertised on Ebay and elsewhere, and is clearly a Project.. It's the wrong colour for a start [resprayed some time ago Dark Metallic Blue], with some Cup 1 slotted on in place of the Slots..

Looking forward to you joining me on this Journey.. 8)

Looks like very minor issues on MOT at least, so not much needed to bring it up to snuff though MOT not a searching test! Not what you expect for a 'project' anyway.

Third time lucky it passed..

I emailed the Seller about the Belts and any other potential issues / time bombs.. His reply:

Quote:
I havn’t changed the belts, but when i inspected them they looked in good shape.

To Do List:
Quote:
Instrument cluster earth - to resolve intermittent fuel gauge currently 2/3rds full but you should keep filled up on the drive home just in case i got it wrong.
Front coil springs
Oil sump gasket change
Dehumidify following carpet clean.
...
replace window scrappers - supplied
replace sunroof seal - it always bothered me that they sprayed over it.
straighten rear interior cards
reconnect timing belt sensor wire - took me a while to work out what it was.

Adding..
Quote:
The good things are:
The tyres are great
Breaks where done
Spark plugs new
HT leads New
Distributor - i started to renovate a spare one but actually the existing one working fine
Air Filter new

The other bit i always really wanted to do is upgrade the suspension all round, and polybush everything, just to tighten everything up.

Then its just a respray!

Unfortunately, the paint job is a really bad one; not even the Glass came out when it was done..

That's a nice list to be going on with. Definitely advised to renew shock absorbers all round — they will be knackered by 120,000. Bit puzzled about springs as they last forever (I changed mine for purely aesthetic reasons, but I'm a fusspot!).

Reference to belt sensor wire is ominous. Why is job of plugging it back in on the to-do list? If the wire is disconnected then a belt tension warning will be showing permanently. Does it disappear when sensor reconnected? If you don't know timing history (and you can't tell much by inspection unless there's a gross problem damaging the belt) then make it a priority to renew, ditto water pump and examine condition of cam sprockets for wear.

Another job which will make massive difference is new engine mounts. You can go for the very expensive Porsche mounts, or the Volvo equivalents which are very cheap, but may require slightly adapting to install. If sump gasket needs changing it's a great time to change mounts, as you'll have done a lot of the work in lowering steering rack and removing cross-member.

May be me being unfamiliar with S2, but the rear brake caliper looks unfamiliar. Later S2s had the S4 4-piston Brembos and that's what it looks like you have at front. If they are Brembos then check them for plate lift and refurb accordingly. Again makes massive difference to braking feel/performance.

Fantastic to find a manual though!

The front Springs have been cut down  so need replacing.. Someone thought it better than paying for a pair of H&R lowerings.. :o

Yes, this is one area I want to discuss with the Seller.. This kind of relatively inexpensive [and yet massively preventative] outlay really should not be skipped..

8) Great advice, will take it on..

Unsure on Brake history, other than that they were extensively refurbished relatively recently.. Will report back..

I forgot to add if you want to tighten things up then by this mileage you need new steering rack bushes, inner and outer tie rods and lower ball joints.

Realise funds/time aren't unlimited though, and you'll have your own priorities!

Well, some Bad News I'm afraid..

I turned up at Midday on Saturday expecting to see the 928 S2 I had been discussing with the Seller the last week or so, and instead was faced with a rather sorry, neglected and wanting 928 S2.. :(

I was so disappointed..

Firstly, the Car had not been washed, and had clearly been left out overnight for several nights [ground dirt splashback etc. from the rain], and had considerable condensation in the rear glass; to the point where the glass had runs of water.. Brake Disks heavily corroded [not just heat rust etc.], and sections of the trim partly disconnected to the body.. I opened the Passenger Door, and as I did, was met with a filthy footwell and a musty odour.. I didn't want to get in, so moved around to the Boot and opened that, with a creak, and was faced with a heavily sun bleached carpet, a ripped rear seat back/head rest, warped quarter panels, moisture, and that same damp smell.. Lifting the carpet out of the way, I put my hand on the chassis, and felt wet, and dirt, and more wet..

I was close to tears..

Moving to the Driver's Door, I opened that and saw a tatty cockpit that belonged to a Car that no one had loved in some time.. Key in the ignition and rotated to Lights On, and the Oil Pressure Needle hit 5 bar, then [having asked permission to start it up] on turnover and idle, didn't reset or read the correct idle pressure.. The Engine sounded good at least, and I thought for a moment "Well, that's something" until..

..the Belt Tension Pulley Bearings started to whine and crunch, I now knew for certain that this 928 wasn't going to be headed to Brighton with me.. To be honest, even if everything else had been 100% I would not have trusted the V8 to make it that far with out something giving way and suffering catastrophic damage..

So that was that, and I went Home by Train, saved only by the fact that I had had the foresight to buy a Return Ticket..!

Well the ad said “you won’t find another in this condition, at this price”, so that bit was honest at least!
