Post subject:  Gear box Removal on Porsche 928 S2

Hi All,
I am a new member to the club curently with 2 porsche 928's, one for spares & one for full restoration & I have stripped most of the inside & outside, seats, door panels, side windows, lights, bumpers ect ready for a full respray however I am now looking to remove the gearbox & the engine to insure a first class finish to this project & I am looking for some pratical tips on removel of the gearbox this weekend.

There is know Haynes manual for the 928 that I am aware of so I have been learning as I am going along however if somebody has any pratical tips out there or has completed this and can give me a general guide on what should come off first this would be great.

I have managed to jack the back of the car up on to two heavy duty large axle stands on the jacking points which leaves me good acces underneath as I guess the gearbox will need to be dropped down & pulled out of the back of the underneath of the car.

From what I can see the exuast back box will have to come off, also the back beam & I guess the drive shafts & the main shaft to the engine but at which end & can I remove the whole gearbox & back beam in one go as I will want to remove all this before the respray ?????????????

Sorry to ask a big question like this as a new member but I have managed to work most of the other parts out on the car but now I have got to the point were the only items left to remove are the engine & gearbox.

Hi Malcolm

Good to see you on the forum following our chat at the NEC :D I can't help you with procedures as you're attempting something I would dare  but I'm sure someone will be along to give you some tips.

In the meantime there are diagrams/manuals available here: http://www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm

Good Luck :thumbright:

Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for this and started on the weekend using the link you gave me for the car manuals however stuck by one simple thing which I am sure somebody will no or has already carried out in the club what is the easy way to more the crank round to access the gear box drain plug or is there an easy way that I don't know ?

So far complete exhuast off, heat protection covers off, middile support braces off, electrics off & ready to remove drive sharft & back axle this week but don't realy want a garge floor full of old gear box oil when I remove it.

Thanks agian for you welcome to the club & help with the manual

Hi Malcolm,

Another big 928 fan checking in!

I'm afraid the project you're attempting has me way out of my depth. I try to do as much work as possible myself but nothing as radical as this.

I'm not disparaging the usefulness of this forum but I can guarantee you will get all the answers you need by searching/joining the 928 forum on Rennlist.com. There will be plenty of members who have done similar jobs and the forum has a very generous and supportive atmosphere. I couldn't run my car without it.

The UK 928 owners' list is another invaluable resource, albeit smaller than the US-biased membership of Rennlist. Just check out the website 928.org.uk and you'll find a link to join the email list (it's a mailing list rather than a web-based forum). People on the UK list (not me!) are also likely to be able to help you.

The shortage of manuals for the 928 (apart from the official workshop manual) is a microcosm for the generally low/overlooked profile of the 928 (which is a wonderful car) within the wider Porsche world. Sometimes I envy the 911 guys the coffee-table sized books on every variant, not to mention the telephone book thick manuals similarly available for every generation of this car. The big advantage of the 928 though is a brilliant ownership community which makes up for the lack of 'formal' resources.

Sorry Malcolm I was intimidated by all the heavy strip down stuff and missed the simple question!. Just put a 27mm socket on the crank bolt and turn it till the plug is in line. Make sure you only rotate clockwise (though if you're rebuilding entire engine I suppose it doesn't matter if you put the timing out).

Turning the crank is even easier if you remove the spark plugs.
