Hi there,

I have owned my 1983 928s since about 2000 and due to bad financial circumstances it has been laid up outside for the last 4 years,It really has broken my heart to see it fall apart as it was a really good example!I have now got the money to get it sorted and bring it back to life, Water has got in and condensation has got to all the electricals which i am getting to one at a time, I had an issue with the fuel pump relay and tried the by-pass trick with sucsess and she fired up and sounds great,I am however in need of much advise and a few good contacts , Here is my starter list

Firstly could someone tell me how to spell succsess ,I am having a mental moment and however i try to spell it it does not look right!!

List of works

1/ My rad is shot in the bottom 3 or 4 runs of the outer core in the middle,Otherwise it looks in really good condition,I have tried to solder the holes up with some sucsess,but I may consider a replacement..........,

Any repair tips?
Any idea on the price of a re-core?
There is one on ebay but it is a 4.5 rad ,it has the 2 oil coolers like mine but is it the same?

2/ I am in need of both outer door sills and I have been having a bit of trouble locating them,Please help!!

3/ Rear hatch seal needs replacing are the patten ones any good? I dont really want to spend £130.00

4/ I have to do more checks to find out if the fuel pump relay or the lh ecu (i think) is the problem with the fuel pump not operating, it may be that it is just bad connections ,but if not I may be in need of some parts, I have a lot of 928s2 electrical relays and ecu"s ,The fuel pump relay from the s2 is slightly different and I think a lower ampage ,Will it work?
If not any one got one to swap or sell?

I have a load of s and s2 bits to swap if any one is in need, Parts as follows

Loads of dark brown interior parts (Nearly all) some very good, some bad please ask
s2 relays and ecu"s
s2 Air flow meter
rear s2 spoiler
set of d90 wheels with 3 nearly new tyres (f1s i think)bit of curbing on 1 or 2 will have to look
Rear seat belts
misc other bits,I will have to look!!

Good luck with the project, I can recommend Paul Anderson in Stroud for a replacement used rad although I'm not sure where you could get yours recored?

Electrics are just a case of carefully tracing each circuit at a time and making sure everything is correctly grounded. Also being an 83 I am guessing you have the earlier fuse box which is problematic, I would check over all the fuses and relays before you start chasing around with wiring diagrams etc.

Not sure about the seals I'm afraid!

I don't want to wee on your chips or anything but you may want to re think your options on your 928.

I bought my 928 in 2000 as well and it was a good example and it was laid up for 7 1/2 years before I got round to working on it but I still ended spending £20K on it making it a fine example - however mine was dry stored!

I just think you may have done untold and exspensive damage to yours by exposing to so much moisture.

I have a magazine article where someone has spent £60K on restoring a 928 when a lot of corrosion was found in the rear steel body structure.

The point is that with so many 928's currently on the market you maybe better off buying another one and just using yours as a donor vehicle. For example you could find another 928 that has suffered a thrust bearing failure but otherwise is in superb condition and then just swap out the engine with your current one - thus saving yourself a lot of time and money in the long run?

Difficult decision I know.

I'm in London at the moment - maybe I could pop round and have a look?

You just confirmed what I was worried about deep down, I just love my car and I have missed it the last few years, I would be greatful for your opinion if you have the time ,How long are you in london for ? are you just visiting? I am away for a few days from saturday for my sisters wedding but will be back mid-week next week ,at a push i might be able to do this week but I havent even got my passport sorted yet! My car has had a bit of work in the past like head gaskgets (spelling) steering rack new straight ,through stainless exhaust upto middle silencer (sounds great) I started the engine a few days ago and it sounds fab and really smooth the previous owner spent £££££ on new parts ,and this may be crazy I love my car because it is devoid of those ugly door locks!! silly I know . What happened to yours to make you spend that sort of money? I have spoken to a few mechanics who said that the car should be okay but the electrical gremlins will be a problem for a while , If you fancy a chat pm me your mobile and I will give you a call Many thanks Jez

Hi Llewelyn , Yes thats what I thought! I dont think that there is to much on the corrosion front apart from the sills and a couple of small holes in the rear quarter, the floor must be pretty good because it held an inch of water for long enough!!!, The leather was pretty bad but I have started to get this back after watching endless youtube vids its amazing what you can do to leather with some wet and dry paper and leather dye, I think as I have said before that my main issues will be the electrics, but I will do these one at a time untill they are all back to normal,I do intend to do all the small time consuming bits myself ,this I think will save a packet ,I cant think how as Ben said in his post that someone could spend 60k on restoring a 928 unless they paid Porsche to do it! and had lots of it gold plated lol ,The engine did sound good after a long sleep ,all the hoses look pretty good ,I just have to un-jam the throttle cable which seems to have dried up as have the door handles and various other bits, I am not after a concourse car just a good clean reliable example ,The body work on my car is an off white .which I really like and I havent seen one the same (.Most seem to be pure white,) its really straight NO dents ,digs etc ,I think this is why I want to save it if possible ,,,Jez

The first advice I always used to give in your situation when I was the PCGB 928 Moderator was this , with regard to electrics....particularly when cars had been left standing for years...

REPLACE ALL fuses...every single one and you will be amazed how many things suddenly start working.....

Hi Jez as for the sills when i took off my sill covers there was some very small amount rust on them were the galvanise had broken down on the inside to fix it i cut it out and had made repair panels made at a local metal shop with a rolling machine great job. As for the smart blade fuses i got mine from C.P.C. on line . With the leather cleaning & conditioning use GLIPTONE products on E BAY best there is leaves a new smell of leather to recolour them use good shoe polish best again TARRAGO with a dye in it wire wool very fine 000 grade better than wet/dry hope this helps you cheers.

Are,nt the fuses in an 83 the ceramic type, they are in mine, 80 MY, which I recently refurbed the board.., cleaned etc with new ceramics with no problems .
The only problems you get with ceramic fuses is the fact that people neglect them, Iv,e never had any issues in twenty one years !
I stand to be corrected ?
