Post subject:  Tyres?

So looks like I need some new rear tyres on the S4. One is showing some uneven wear and looks done. I also picked up a puncture in the other at the weekend and had to get it repaired to get me home from Mull, as well as use a can of tyreweld (great stuff) to get me to the garage.

The S4 is on GTS 17" Cups so I guess I need 255/40 R17. What speed rating is recommended? And does anyone have any good recommendations for tyres?

I was on Goodyear eagle f1's, the directional ones. I was fairly happy with them but am not sure they are available anymore in that size.

Looks like a good excuse to get my wheels refurbed. I'll need to get the tracking looked at as well.

Hi there

I am looking for tyres as well ,I too had the F1s which I loved they are still available but they have changed the tread pattern from the nice looking sweeping curves to a standard looking block pattern something to do with noise reduction I think ! Probably still a good tyre but I dont like the look of the pattern on them

Yes I notice the Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric tyres are available but not the directional ones. My front tyres are still good and I would have liked to have kept the same all round.

What speed rating would you go for? I'm guessing the higher I go rating wise the less options are available.

Hi :)

I go through several sets a year due to my Nitrous...

I HIGHLY recommend Falken 453`s...

Great in the dry and good (not great) in the wet...

I pay around £150 each for my 18x10 rears and £100 each for my 7.5x18 fronts...thats usually cheaper than all other makes....

Oh and they are "Y" rated (thats 186 mph plus)..and I wouldnt put less than a Y rated tyre on ANY 928 ...Nitrous or not.... the next rating down is "W" which is 168...which in my opinion is much too close to any 928s top speed to use...

and on which UK road can you legally do 168?

W should be fine for any normal day to day use car, its the load rating that's just as important

Hi :)

My opinion about using Y rather than W was about quality rather than speed....

Considering that the tyre contact area at each corner of a car is LESS than the size of a paperback book page, then personally I prefer the BEST (for grip) not the cheapest....

Think I'm going to go for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. They appear to do very well in the reviews and I can at least keep the same brand all round as I'm not planning on doing the fronts as they still have plenty of life in them. Next problem seems to be finding somewhere that sells them. bestbuytyres.com have them at a good price £145.83 each but their closest fitting centre is Falkirk

If you are happy with Eagle F1s I would stick with them. F1s IME were a great tyre (an old car of mine was superb on a fresh set of Goodyear GSD 3s).

I would otherwise recommend the Michelin Pilot Super Sports (these are meant to let you have your cake and eat it) if available or the Pilot Sport 3s.

On my daily. Falkens I have had a mixed blessing with. Kumhos on my car (well, the KH31s) were not the best grippers (compared to even Goodyear NCT 5s!) and they did not even cover 10k! I am now on Michelins where the grip is better and I still have tread left after 10k!

As a leftfield suggestion I would look at the Nankang NS-2Rs (not to be confused with the NS-2s). Going off initial reports no road tyre touches them for grip (in how great they are). They are also quite cheap. However, tyre life can be compromised and being a track biased tyre road noise can become a problem.

If I keep my car next year the NS-2Rs will almost certainly be an option seeing as how l cover less miles in the car these days.

My 928 went to CLCM in Sighthill. Transformed the handling. Best £50 I spent on the car.

Seriously what a pain getting tyres for the rears. I ordered the Goodyears just to find out they were not in stock and would take 6 weeks. Tried searching most of the online places and not had any joy. I have ended up having to go with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 at £150 a tyre from Kwik Fit. One of the rear tyres is right through the rubber so need them asap.


Lee, I'm assuming they did as you seemed happy, but did CLCM in Sighthill make sure the suspension was settled out before the alignment? I have heard if you raise the car prior then the suspension sags and when it settles out again the alignment is off.

Short answer was yes, as he didn't have to jack it up. He had told me that if he had to jack up the rear I wasn't getting the car back that night.

I had Toyo Proxies all round and loved them. If you buy them, from tyre express or somewhere, I have a mobile man in Edinburgh that'll come to you and fit for a reasonable price. :D
