Post subject:  My 928 door locks have just stopped working

Just opened my 928 S4 [MY88] and the drivers door has opened but passenger one is still locked? Now when I try the key in the drivers door lock it seems loose and seems like something has broken on the inside as the "lock" position is not there. The unlock feels like it has some pressure & contact but the lock side is completely loose/no contact?

I removed the locking bolt for the barrel & it come completely out of the door! Oh Sh.....t I don't think it should do that!!!
Seem my barrel has broken with the curved end still attached to the ball cup& rod. Guess I have to find a replacement barrel quickly - I am supposed to be driving to France on Thursday evening for the LAON Historic weekend in France.

Guess I need to find a new barrel & key? Can I keep my old key & innards & just change the outside barrel & the lever coupling at the back
Thanks

Steve

You and Laon are jinxed Steve! Weren't you trying to find a running engine for your S4 this time last year for Laon?

Thanks Guys. But yes you both are right.

1st year I got stood up and was looking for someone to accompany me - which my daughter did in the end & really enjoyed it.

2nd year [last year] my daughter & I went again but had the problem with my engine giving way and me borrowing a 928 GTS from Paul Anderson - in Pink!

This year has excelled itself so far - on Friday eve I rang the hotel in Laon that we booked through Expedia last October to confirm sleeping arrangements - 2 beds for my daughter & I - to my horror the hotel had no booking form Expedia! Expedia said they have the booking but the hotel didn't get it! So Expedia have been helpful in trying to compensate me with any room at any price in Laon - but that like asking for gold dust on the moon! So, I have spent all of Friday evening, Sat & Sun and again yesterday with Expedia booking support trying to find alternative accommodation - I will save the full details for another posting - but we found several rooms & then expedia have missed them in the time they had spoken to me on the other line & got back to the hotel. Crazy! It was like a soap story episode or a horror story!

So yesterday we finally get our hotel room sorted right in the town, 5 mins from the Cathedral. So one should be able to breathe a sigh of relief - only to unlock the 928 and the door lock break!

Also, I order a complete new set of tyres last week on 2-3 days delivery so they should have been with me on Friday last week. They didn't turn up yesterday and now I am hoping they arrive today!

You couldn't write a better story and make it up! :):):)

Steve, did Mrs Bizman forgive you for Emily & the pictures of the shot glasses in the chinese last year?

Well latest update.....

- Paul Anderson is sending up a key & barrel overnight as a quick fix for the trip this weekend. Then I will go down next week & we will exchange the outer barrel & working with my lock so I can keep the same key set.

- Just checked with DPD online and my new set of tyres will arrive this morning!

All Sorted!
Who said the British Bulldog determination was dead...... :):):):)

Laon here we come. - Jim, see you there

Out of interest. for anyone that has this door lock problem in the future. See the photos attached and the notes below on the symptoms if it helps anyone in the future.

- The key lock unlocked the car then I noticed that the key was very loose in the barrel - no resistance to try to lock it again but some springy resistance if I moved it to the unlock rotation.
- Paul Lacey posted back to my quickly on 928.org forum to remove the small rubber grommet on the inside side edge of the door just above the lock and remove the bolt. Then draw the barrel out of the door just enough so I could see if the ball & cup fitting had come undone and to push the cup on the push rod back onto the ball of the barrel lock.

All sounded very easy until I unbolted the barrel and it just cam all the way out of the door - see photo. The ball-striker at the bottom of the lock/barrel has broken off - still attached to the push rod cup end in the door. As the barrel & key are out in my hand. See photos

What a saga Steve - the Laon gods don't want you there but good luck in fixing all the problems/booking cock-ups in time and getting the tyres on.

Lock photos very interesting and thanks for posting for when it may happen to rest of us. Will have a look at that bolt behind grommet just to get familiar.

You'll be fine, it's best these things happen just before rather than on the trip.

What day are you going to see Paul ?
I may well be popping down there soon :D

Laon trip was a great weekend down in France.
Weather was scorching and 928 behaved brilliantly!
Even new Door lock worked well! - Thanks to Paul Anderson!

Mine was the only 928 over there with over 725 cars making the trip.
