A guy came to view my '79 928 yesterday, he saw it on Ebay but lives walking distance from me. Anyway, turns out he already has an early 928 'project'. I ended up going to see his car and although it's on a private plate it looks to me like it was built in 1978, chassis number shows '79MY but am I right in saying '79MY cars would have been built late '78? Had some early features such as never having had a passenger wing mirror.
He's asked if I'd take it in px and although it's a mega project needing virtually a full resto it's worth saving imo. I don't have the time or money at the moment but was thinking of taking it if I can get it for a few 100 and putting it away until I retire in 3 years.

Porsche model years align with factory holiday dates (or did - maybe present day Porsche has no time for such indulgences!)

At any rate that was the date when production lines would be switched over for new models.

So model year ran from 1 Sep - 31 Aug i.e. any 928 built from 1st Sep 1978 would be a 1979 MY, so you are correct about a MY79 being built late 1978
