Here's the first. Will update as I go. [ I can only work on the 928 some weekends.]

Is it getting bead blasted? What's the process?

The corrosion is only superficial - so they will get my normal treatment - cellulose thinner wash down+steel wool / kurust rust treatment to effected areas / Hammerite finish.
All done by hand.

After reading reviews about POR15 I would be tempted to try that instead of the Hammerite. Seems highly rated from what I have read.

Thanks for this product tip but unfortunately it looks like the spray version I would like to use is not available in the UK.

It looks like good stuff but from what I’ve seen it’s four times as expensive as Hammerite!

The main engine brace has not suffered any stone chipping – just water penetration - so I’m happy with just using Hammerite in this instance.

Hi Ben , You can get great results with hammerite or any Rustoleum/POR type non spray paints if you thin it down a bit with white spirit ( white spirit is ok and a fraction of the cost of hammerite thinners) Lay it on with a brush and then remove any brush marks with a mini foam roller (2/3 coats required) .Personally that's how I would do it as brush coats go on a lot thicker than spray and you get a lot more paint in a tin for your money compared to a spray can!

Unfortunatley this job is taking far to long. Summer could be over by the time I finish. I have another car that needs urgent attention and it looks like I may have a major oil leak from the oil pump which could need professorial help.

Hi Ben, Progress has been slow on my car although I have stripped out all the interior and completely refurbished it almost like new! I have straightened all the warped panels ,re-stuck all the vinyl and replaced most of the panel clips (vw t25 clips on ebay same as porsche and lots cheaper) All parts then wrapped in bin bags and stored ! Both sills are now fitted. I have obtained new window scraper seals ,sunroof seals ,new rear bumper stickers,All the external window trims have been removed and refurbished as have the wiper arms and spoilers and I have most of the parts I need to complete the project. I will be putting the car into my garage in the next few weeks and then I will be able to do a bit each night so things will really get moving and hopefully I will have her ready by the autumn! My original plan as you know was to get the car running and looking Ok. But after seeing your car it moved the goal posts in a big way and now I want it looking like new! so its all your fault that I am not out enjoying my 928! Lol .I will start posting updates and pictures when work starts ,Cant wait to get really stuck into it !

Nice one Jezza, sounds like your making steady progress. I look forward to seeing you and your 928 again when:

a/ Mines fixed.
b/ Its summer.

The heat shields are no longer available. - mine were still in good nick but I replaced the fixings.

Subframe is now back on but I forgot to replace the steering rack fixing bolts that I had to destroy to remove - picking them up Friday.

I also re-painted the starter motor, as it was off.



I used 'stone chip' paint for the first time. - Very impressed with this paint - would recommend it.

This job is now complete and tested - and everything seems OK.

Unfortunately though wile doing the work I noticed there is engine oil leaking out all over the alternator.

I cannot tell where this oil is coming from so it's off to Dr. A's again. Hopfully he can fix it this week.
