This is what is happening:
1 Start engine, push in rear screen switch, orange symbol on switch lights up.
2 turn off ignition engine keeps running park light on rev counter goes slightly dimmer.
3 Engine still running turn ignition back on,pull out rear screen switch, orange symbol still on,turn off ignition engine goes off orange symbol still on , dash lights off.
4. Press in rear screen switch dash lights come on.Pull out rear screen switch dash lights go off.Orange symbol still on.
5 Start engine orange symbol off.
6 Turn off key engine goes off all lights off.
Hope this makes sense as I've just tied myself in a knot writing it! Should the orange symbol go off when the switch is pulled out? Should the switch pop out itself on a timer? Is it a sticky relay holding it in?

Euan it does sound like you have problem with both switch sticking in pod (it's a button - should not stay in when pushed, unless twisted to deice position) and the defroster relay sticking on.

The light goes off when you start engine as all the current then diverted from relay as starter such a huge load. This is in fact a known workround for sticjy relat - restarting engine.

The button sticks because the pod material is shrinking, but a new relay will cure problem of things staying on even when you physically pull button out.

Thanks guys. I'll get a new relay and try and free off the sticky switch.
I have a few other electrical gremlins to attack over the winter
1 No interior lights
2 Tailgate release keeps turning, have pulled fuse.
3 No electric mirrors
4 No dash pod illumination
5 No headlight washers
6 No cruise control
7 ABS light on
8 Brake pad light on
9 Heater won't go cold
I've tried changing all the fuses, but will have to delve in a bit deeper, and will be pestering you again in due course for an idiots guide to electrics, one thing at a time!
Mechanically it starts and drives well, jobs for winter are
1 Front wishbone bushes
2 New exhaust middle section (silencer is rattly at tickover)
3 New pads all round
4 Sort out missing screen wash pipework
5 Replace power steering hose after reading fire horror stories
Cheers Euan
